Just spent the better part of two hours fighting and finally landing a massive 30 lb Carp, took me almost 2 hours to get in. All that on 4 lb test. They are ugly smelly nasty fish but have more endurance than any fish that swims in fresh water. It was dark when it came in and the last ten minutes I was fighting the fish I was also fighting my 270 lb son who wanted to get going. He's head butting and hitting me while I'm trying to get this beast in, thank God another young man helped me net the thing. I could have and should have broke the line but after all that time I wanted to see what the hell it was. I have no idea how a thirty lb fish can fight so long, it's amazing...

Carp recipe:

Scale and gut carp.

Nail carp to suitable sized cedar plank.

Salt, pepper and garlic powder liberally.

Baste with virgin olive oil and grill at 375 for about an hour.

Throw carp away and eat the board.

4 lb test ? C'mon Bob, that is either a record or you are just the best straight faced lier fisherman gentleman that was ever born and I don't ever want to sit down at a poker table with you.
I hooked into a 20lb blue once while snapper fishing, [baby blues], on 8lb test,I had him on for about 3 minutes before all the line was gone, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

EVER SEE A REEL CATCH FIRE? Trying to remember the name of "blues" something like Pomatomus Saltatrix, or something like that. People actually have to get out of the water if a school goes by.

Any way great story, I'd play guitar for you any day,,, but don't ask me to play cards.

It was 4lb test. I seldom use any line heavier than that. ANd an ultralight Pflueger reel and an ultralight Ugly Stick rod. If you take your time with a fish that size and keep constant pressure with your rod just under the breaking strength of the line you can eventually get a huge fish in. The key is NOT to get impatient. People point their rods at a huge fish and think the reel should tire the fish out. A reel only holds line. The drag of a reel should be set just short of breaking strength. I was continuously adjusting the drag strength while fighting this fish. Every time the fish stopped pulling I set the drag heavier and hauled it closer. Every time the fish started ripping line out I loosened the drag. The entire time my rod wa sheld up high, bent over. It's that bend in the rod that the fish is pulling against. That's what tires the fish out, NOT the reel. A big Carp lasts longer than any fish in fresh water other than perhaps a big Blue Catfish. I don't know if you've seen that River Monsters show where this angler from Australia goes worldwide seeking giant freshwater fish. That guy is a master at fighting huge fish. The rod is the key. By the way I hooked it on a Cabella's spoon of all things. The treble hook was completely mangled when it was netted. I dare say another 5 minutes or less in the lake and that treble would have broke off. That's the second huge fish I caught there as it was getting dark. The other was a 10 lb Wiper, a cross between a White Bass and Striped Bass that is stocked all over the state of Kansas. The Wiper was landed on 2lb test and took over a half hour to get in, also in the dark. I once saw a guy land a Flathead over 75 lbs on ten lb test. It took almost 3 hours to get it in. I was there the whole time he had it on. It can be done. I did know a guy who at one time held the world record Flathead. He was fishing in a boat on the Kansas River all night, drunk, didn't catch a thing and started reeling in his lines and thought he had a snag. I don't remember what line he had but about four hours later they landed a Flathead just under 100 lbs. He said it towed the boat up and down the Kansas River hundreds of yards...

Carp is considered a delicacy in the Orient. They know how to prepare it, we don't.

I would wager that the carp they serve in the Orient is farm raised. I always thought that carp tasted bad because of what they eat in the wild.

I saw a movie on PBS on a family who left tthe city to live on a farm. There was a well known carp in the river named Lead Pencil. His name was lead pencil because that was how thick his whiskers were. He was quite old and everyone tried to catch him. I saw this movie many years ago and just loved it.

That's a good one. Actually caught the big Wiper a few years ago. Last year I saw one cruising the surface, looked like the Loch Ness monster! Couldn't reach it from shore but I've got a plan to get my casts out a lot further this year. What I'm really interested in is finding out what's in another lake I fished quite a bit last year. I had three giants on that I never even turned around. Could have been huge Channel Cats, Carp or Wipers there also. The key is to wear them so that you have a stalemate, then gradually get them coming toward you. Once I have them turned it's a matter of time before I own them...
