"if you refuse to look at what's coming at you, you deserve to get hit by it"

built the worlds largest nuclear reactor on the worlds most active fault line
see a hurricane coming and choose to stay
city destroyed by quake in natural quake zone and rebuild it there

None of these choices were made or unavoidable by the public. Governments do these things, not us!

We however do have a choice where we choose to live unless we're too impoverished to do so.
If you want to believe that "it could never happen to me" then you join the German Jews of 1930.
If you choose to ignore rather than prepare...

Funny how everybody is always telling Californians they need to leave, but then don't want them in their city like Wal-Marts, Home Depots and prisons.

I remember the big exodus after the Northridge Quake and people were bitching about how Californians were moving to Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, driving up the property values to the point they couldn't live in their own city, whining that Californians kept asking for weird food, taking away their jobs, making too much noise when they all go to bed at 7 p.m. and koo koo ka choo.

Well I can't afford to move so I'm stuck here, so anyone thinking I deserve to die because I live here can eat sh*t.

On a lighter note, here's one of the most beautiful things I've ever read.

You Cali's just got learn not to build nuke plants on major fault lines.

May be we all have to show the same love all the time.....

wasn't saying that and wasn't looking for a fight. just saying keep an open eye and mind and be at least a little prepared for emergencies like natural disasters.
Jeez :?

The American Red Cross helps out in at least 67,000 disasters a year.

sh*t happens. When it does, ppl need help. I think it's really rather crude to put it in terms of dollars & cents, myself (no offense, SG - I realize that it is a significant concern these days. for many ppl). For me, the only questions are -

How bad is it?

How can I help?

Not that there is a lot I can do, but those are the questions that immediately come to mind.

I AM thinking of joining the Red Cross, though.

Hayden, it wasn't directed at you, it looks like you were quoting someone else. That's a pretty messed up quote. There are many people who don't have much here. They can't afford to prepare. They're like most people, they went where the jobs were to feed their families. You all should know about that.

No, I'm just tired of everyone going on about California. Got this stupid chick on FB, posting all this crap about Cali and how she's glad she doesn't live there anymore. We have a lot of earthquakes, always have. I have supplies here, providing a tsunami doesn't wash it all away.

Here's some historicla earthquake data for eveyone looking just at California. You may be surprised by who's had earthquakes:

More historical data just for California:

Glen, I'm all for flubbers still. ;o)

I have nothing but sympathy for the victims in Japan. The leadership in industry and politics there on the other hand leave room for nothing to desire.

Pray tell, where on earth would you suggest is safe from all impending disasters?

RE: Your comment on Southern Cal: "It's not a matter of 'if,' but when."

What's your point? Pick your disaster. I don't care WHERE you live on earth, sooner or later a major disaster will hit there. Nobody really knows when, and there never IS any if about it.

Ever heard of the "New Madras" fault? It lies directly in the midst of U.S. and harbors far more destructive capacity than the San Andreas. It threatens to change how the Great Lakes themselves empty into the Midwest. Would you suggest everyone in the Midwest move? Where to then?

Right here in the North East, there is a fault running from Quebec down through Vermont, NH and Boston. I've felt a few earthquakes from it during my lifetime, some of which were extremely powerful (not where I am, but at the epicenter, which happened to be in the wilderness), and threaten to flatten cities like Boston, surrounding cities, as well as several New England cities and possibly even Montreal, because very few buildings here were ever built with earthquakes in mind.

The New Madras fault is already on record for one of the biggest, and most widespread earth quakes in our country's history. It just happened to be during the Eighteen hundreds, so there was little damage compared to what would happen today if a similar quake were to happen again, and one of that magnitude is expected at ANY moment.

Not a matter of "IF" but "when."

Where do you propose everyone live that doesn't harbor some sort of threat of mass destruction, sooner or later?

There IS no such place.

How 'bout we just do what we can to help out when these things happen? It could happen to ANY of us.

Live in Idaho or western Montana.
No threat of mass distruction.
Safe zones.

Rate of cancer has increased quite a bit since then in the U.S.
Coincidence? Maybe.

Chaeya wrote:Most earthquakes aren't that bad. You have that small percentage which are very bad which will produce a tsunami. Just like you have that one tornado that shows up at 3 a.m. when everyone's in bed and that warning came too late and a lot of damage was done. In fact, tornadoes do more damage than Earthquakes. People may get away, but their homes are leveled and they have to rebuild which causes for emergency aid.

Because of the planetary events happening at the moment, high seismic activity is to be expected and I take full responsibility for where I live. For instance, I'm terrified of tornadoes. I grew up in the midwest and I was terrified then and still am. However, earthquakes don't bother me as much. Most of the buildings here have been retrofitted. I've been in 2 large earthquakes, one which was the Northridge quake. I sat up in bed rocking and rolling until it was over.

I wouldn't live near a volcano. I agree, that's crazy, but at least you can get a warning to get the heck out of there. The problem is when you have a third world country with very poor people. With poor living structures and resources, you're bound to have a very large loss of life. Then with volcanos you have pyroclastic flows which pretty much end you. No thanks.

Chaeya

Im just the opposite.
Tornados don't scare me.
Earthquakes scare the sh*t out of me. Nowhere to run unless you're in the air.

Live well and do well by others while your alive... if there's an afterlife you'll be rewarded... if not, you'll feel damn good about yourself when you die and nobody will be able to say things about you after you die like they will all of the politicians!

Oh yes it will. I learned a long time ago never give the # to side by side pay phones to different woman. If for some strange reason they call at the same time you might as well be dead.
