Yep it's cute.
Not as cute as his idea to get free backing for his project though.

NYU must have a masters degree program in panhandling.

Um...sans? Looking for sponsorship is a tried & true method of starting up a co.

By going to ppl, rather than banks, this guy is just going a different route, but one that I applaud, as no frikken bank can expect a return from its investment. Screw 'em!

I love Kickstarter. I had planned on using it myself at some point. Here's the deal, you're not just giving them money, you're getting something for it.

There is a difference in "sponsorship" and begging for money on the net.

Hey if it works, great for him.
Just seems a little cheese dic to me.

Oh right, Sans, we'll just do things the old fashioned way and save our money, open up a little shop, work hard for years and years until we become a fixture in the neighborhood off our little guitar. Oh wait, the people aren't coming to my shop anymore, why? Oh wait, some Koreans just copied my idea and are selling my invention at half the price, and Wal-mart's got 'em.

Now you have to have good credit to get funding, these so-called "angel" networks are nothing but investors looking to fund already lucrative businesses, not startups.

The days of making deals over a drink and a handshake are dead. You want to make something happen, you get your but on the Internet and you work it the best way you can.

I still believe in hard work.

Sorry, no offense intended, just seems ... weak ... to me.
To invest implies return or loss.
Irrelevant of what is invested money energy etc.
One can "work their butt off" much like you yourself has been doing without panhandling.

Well Sans, I'm a business owner and I've had my business since 2004, funding what I can through my 401K (taking a 40% whack) and my paycheck, what I can spare. In my six years of doing business, I've damned near closed up shop 3 times because I'm barely making it. And it isn't just me, I know other people with businesses who are doing what they love and who have great product just barely making it. I do Renaissance Faires because it's the only place people will buy my lotions and perfume oils. My lotions are just as good if not better than what you'd buy in the store, people rave about my products when they get them and wonder why nobody knows about me.

Well here's why:

1. I don't have at least $500 a month to pay for website optimization so that my website will appear in the top pages of Google. And I don't have that web savvy friend who can do keywords and the like.

2. I can't afford the Pay per Click thing that Google, yahoo and others offer.

3. I don't have the cash to do any advertising of any kind because what little money I have I spend on buying ingredients to make my products.

6. I work a 40 hour week then get up early in the morning to drive out of town to faires and often sit there for long periods not making a dime. Out of my 3 years of doing faires, I've yet to have a day where I've been able to come away and just say "f**k yeah, I'm getting somewhere."

7. I spend my time marketing what little I can on the Internet, but my friends cry broke or just ignore me, but then brag that they just spent double the money buying some other product made by a big company or at the mall. It isn't that my stuff is bad, it's just when you don't have cash behind you, people don't take you serious. That's just how it is.

I can't get a business loan because of my bankruptcy and poor credit history when I was sick. Because I can't show a profit worth a damn, no investor will touch me in a 1,000 years.

Dude, if I offered a package on Kickstarter that reaches thousands of people saying that

For $5.00 I'll send you a bottle of lotion
(which is 50% less than my regular bottle)

For $10.00 I'll send you a bottle of lotion and a perfume oil.

That's begging? Really? When they're getting a deal for their money, cheaper than what I usually offer?

These days are different. If you want to make a business you need a minimum of $1,000,000 --- yes, that's right, and most of it will go into marketing and finding a celebrity to go "oooh this stuff is good." Everybody who has taken their business to the next level these days have gotten a big chunk of change either from a group of investors, their rich daddy, their ex-husband from taking their ass to the cleaners or somebody died and left them a fortune.

The only people I know how worked hard all their life and got something lost it because Wal-Mart moved into town. There's your hard work, Sans, it's bullshit!

Even Mozart needed sponsorships, sans...& Beethoven...& Mahler...& da Vinci...& Michelangelo...&, most likely, Bill Gates, at one time.

It's a time-honored way of doing business. You go out & get ppl to invest in your dream. It isn't sleazy. It's part of doing business on a larger scale than one can do alone.

At least he isn't just begging his church, right? Cuz that's how many of the greats did it in the past.

Ah my dear Chaeya

As frustrating as it is ...

You believe in hard work too.

Everything you do proves it.

You keep using the word invest ??

Perhaps I missed something ??

Where did he promise or even imply a possible return ??

If he is looking for investors ( whom will or might be compensated )
Or "sponsors" whom are compensated.

Then I have both feet in my mouth ... again.

Looks like I am the one with his foot in his facial cavity, sans...I read too much into it. I thought he was looking for investors & sponsors. I just reread the thing, & find myself rather embarrassed, so I'll admit my mistake, & shut the hell up, now, if it's okay with you...

Really is a fine line we draw is it not Phil ?

Hey ... if it works for him, so be it.

Just not my style.
This is one reason I try to stress to folk that we ( NKF ) will accept gifts.

But we are a mission ... all we really want to do is play.
