I figured I would make a thread just for Death Metal discussion. We got any Death Metal fans here? What bands do you like?

There seems to be some debate on what counts as "death metal." Some say it is a recent phenomenon. I say it goes back to the NWOBHM.

Been listening to various death metal bands since the '80s... Great for working out. I have to be in the mood for it, so I am not a total fanatic about it, but there are just those times when nothing but some brutal, dark rhythms and violent growling and screaming will get you through the day. Everything from Disincarnate and Deicide to Six Feet Under and Necrophagiist...
And now I have some inspiration for my lifting mix tonight.

Been jamming with my sons group " Graveside Manner " who has a myspace page but I'm too stupid to post a link yet ! Its a lot different than the original stuff I write and I can't understand anything my boy growls , but its still fun to do. I've found if you want to play you better be prepared for anything and everything. But the best money I've made was playing country music. I wonder why ?
Its another day in Paradise !!!!

I've followed metal for a long time. I found the following:
"Metal has certainly come a long way since its inception into modern day music, and for a long while it has been suppressed underground in order to keep the mainstream clean of its filth. Expressing anger in music is a detriment to society, or so the censoring, ignorant music/money whores want you to think. However, luckily for us, because of this suppression, it has come back 100 times as strong, with many different variants to choose from. There literally is something for everyone in Metal music. It has shown time and time again that is a genre most likely to incorporate change to order survive.
..... you would be hard pressed to find a solid "Metal" group these days at all! Most styles have now been named (or pigeonholed w/e), but the fact of the matter is, most people will not get into Metal because it certainly is a fierce sound to encapsulate in a single go, or even multiple goes. But with all these variants, I'm certain some people will be able to relate to some off-shoots more than others....."

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal:
"This genre is a dinosaur of the metal genre and has everything it needs from the beginning. It has speed, twin-guitar harmonies and surreal vocals. The music is mostly upbeat, but has the attitude that metal is most famous for including controversial topics such as religion and politics into its lyrical world."
1. Iron Maiden
2. Saxon
3. Motorhead

2. Atheist (Jazz-orientated)
3. Cynic ( The famous Focus album)
4. Nile (Egyptian themed melodies)

Avant Garde Metal
"Avant Garde Metal is a strange genre as there is no specific aesthetic to apply in order to gain this sound. It could be seen as a bastardization of progressive metal and other completely different genre's, but this mix is implemented in a way to emphasize the contrasting elements. For the most part, the sound always comes out great. Containing symphonic and operatic elements combined with the power of metal, this certainly is a fascinating genre."

Black Metal:
"Black Metal is certainly the most controversial of all the metal genre's, and is known for generally heralding from Scandinavia (notably Norway). The most famous black metal band Mayhem had the lead singer shoot himself in the mouth with a shotgun (the others made a necklace from the skull remains), the bassist (Varg Vikernis) killed the guitarist (Øystein Aarseth) by stabbing him several times. Why? Because Euronymous was conspiring against him?"
"The first wave of Black Metal took the fast speedy aesthetic of trash metal and glamorized it with pagan belief to create what most people see as Satan's own metal. Obviously most of these people are ignorant to what exactly Satanism is...."
"The Second Wave of Black Metal is where it gets really interesting. Bands such as Mayhem and Darkthrone were the prominent figures at the time, not just because of their music, but the lifestyles the lived. Many of these band members have been accused and incarcerated because of their ties to church-burnings and murder! If you want your metal real, than black metal during this time is the way to go. Some will argue that black metal still exists, but I for one believe that Black Metal started and ended in Norway as the Second Wave collapsed.
Since then Black Metal has become more symphonic and should be known rather as Extreme Symphonic Metal, than the true counterparts."
First Wave:
1. Venom
2. Bathory
3. Mercyful Fate
Second Wave:
1. Mayhem
2. Darkthrone
3. Satyricon (old stuff)(created Medieval Black Metal)
4. Immortal
5. Emperor
6. Burzum (Varg Vikernis's solo band)
Modern Black Metal:
1. Dimmu Borgir (more symphonic)
2. 1349
3. Gorgoroth
Black and Roll:
1. Satyricon (Last two albums especially)

Power Metal/ Symphonic Power Metal/ Extreme Power Metal:
"Power Metal grew out of the NWOBHM, and took on a fast and more mythical aesthetic than the new wavers. Dungeon and Dragons myths, Tokien inspired lyrics, and sometimes amazing technical skill mixed together to create a very upbeat, cheesy metal genre that should be a starting point for most metal newbies."
Early Power Metal:
1. Judas Priest
2. Dio (Ronnie James Dio)
3. Iced Earth
Symphonic Power Metal:
1. Rhapsody (now known as Rhapsody of Fire)
2. Sonata Arctica
3. Stratovarious
4. Symphony X
Extreme Power Metal:
1. Dragonforce
2. Sonata Arctica
3. Children of Bodom (later stuff, early stuff is more Black)
4. Kalmah
Melodic Power Metal:
1. Blind Guardian (Tolkien fanatics)
2. Hammerfall
3. Demons & Wizards

Death metal got popular again, but it did start, and is an offshoot of 1980's thrash and black metal.
Slayer
Kreator
Celtic Frost
Death
Possessed
Obituary
Morbid Angel
Death metal has since grown into sub-genres.
