When I saw a VH1 Special on the "making of" U2's Joshua Tree and some alluding to The Unforgettable Fire, I was STUNNED to learn that many of their songs came together from strapping on instruments and turning it all over to inspiration to create something out of nothing. GOOD FRICKIN' GRIEF!! Well, IRONICALLY, THE EDGE waited for the Drummer and the Bassist, both I personally think are a fierce and dynamic duo for that genre, to pound out a rhythm / hear Adams huge Fender bass lines before Edge worked his Stratocaster & percussive delay trademark sound on top. They ALWAYS rolled tape of some kind. Anything that morphed from a 'JAM" to a 'STUCTURED" melodic output was handed over to BONO to write lyrics and a melody around. They claim its been the their writing style from day one in Dublin Ireland, with perhaps a few exceptions PER album where EDGE had a drum machine and wrote a complete song minus bass and vocals. THIS IS A VERY RARE THING INDEED. I HATE JAMMING. I WRITE USING A BOSS DR 670, WITH BASIC DRUMS AND BASS PARTS WRITTEN WHICH THEN INSPIRE ME TO COME UP WITH THE GUITAR AND VOCALS. The band I'm in are RARE too c'os they love having a choice to play it just the way it is or freedom to add their additional creative flare "humanize" it. But plain old jamming ala 70s toke a spliff and Colt 45 and drive the neighbors to Counseling...................uh, NO. If you do go with the JAM, make sure the neighbors are well spliffed and beer -a-tized before hand. LOL
