I have no problem with the big bang. However, the creation of man is another matter. This is the problem with the church in a nutshell. They have traded the wisdom of God for the ideas of men. They'll do anything to keep the offering plates full in a lot of churches.

God created the heavens and the earth.
And he don't have to explain it.

I don't care what the jerk has to say about modernizing the church. He's still Ratzinger, the Nazi Pope, to me.

The problem is that men seem compelled to explain it. When one group claims to know the details and another group disagrees, that's when the trouble starts. All any of us know for sure is that the universe exists, and most likely began at one point. All else is conjecture.

Did you note that the Catholic Church no longer advocates that the universe was actually created in 6 days?

I like the big bang idea. It's only a theory, but in all things, I have to ask - "What is most likely to have occurred?"

The bible version of creation is right there with the ancient Greeks' version, or the Norse version, or the Hindu one, for me, in terms of "believability."

Phil, one quick note. Saying the Big Bang Theory "is only a theory" is like saying the Theory of Gravity "is only a theory". Like the Theory of Evolution, it is accepted as fact by the majority of educated people in the world.

There is a common misperception of what a "theory" is in science terms, confusing it with with common language use of the term. A "theory" in common language would probably be a "hypothesis" in scientific terms. Hypothesis' are tested, retested, and checked against the available evidence. A "theory" in scientific terms is a framework, using the evidence available, to explain phenomena. It is open to change upon new evidence being discovered. It is not a "hunch" or a "guess." It isn't simply made up.

I hope that helps.

I like how Carl Sagan answered the infinite regression problem of the Big Bang theory

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZxzvdQ85zU

Instead of answering it scientifically, he pointed at Christians and said - well, if they can say God always existed, then we can say the Universe always existed! There!

But, um... we were talking about an explosion here, not eternal pre-existence?

So much for Science not requiring a leap of faith...

The world is a poorer place without Carl Sagan.

But, I like Family Guy's explaination of the universe:

Theories will go on and on until this earth age is over. Nodoby was around when the earth sprung life, so the digging will continue.

Personally, I don't think people have been here that long at all. We're too self-destructive to take care of the planet.

I really don't care what the Catholics or any other "organized religion" think about anything to be perfectly honest.

I know God in my heart through the Spirit.
He is the only guide I need.
Science and discovery continue to amaze me about how awesome HE truly is.

If I were to equate the Catholick church to anything int he bible, it would be the whore of Babylon in Revelation. The church seems to jump into bed with the power of the times. Kings, politicians, Nazis... and now trying to attach itself to logic.

The only posative thing the Cathoholicks have done is save alot of old art and books. Then they hide them in the Vat-Cave-ican
