Years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.
As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet.
(I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?

We just call him "TV." I really fear what his grandkids will be like.

He has a wife now...we call her "Computer."
Their first child is "Cell Phone."
Second child "I Pod."

I wouldn't be surprised if you also had special names for the toaster and toilet. How are those voices in your head today?

TV ETC can be tools or traps.

A tool is only as good as it's user.

That toilet photo is funny as heck & brings back childhood memories.

When I was very small we had a toilet in the hall bath that seemed to me to be a mile from my room at night.

I figured if I could make it back to my bed before the toilet stopped flushing I'd be safe from whatever booger men it conjured up so late at night.

I'm still pretty damn fast ...

Tell you what RG.
Most of television programing is not but perverse garbage.
Men whom strive to live in good character can recognize it for themselves.
And if they cant recognize it for what it is.
There is really no point trying to enlighten them.

I was finally able to get rid of a pair of beavers , now a river otter moved in . He isn't as destructive as the beavers but he eats like an elephant. I doubt I'll have any fish left this spring. I couldn't bring myself to hurting something as beatifull as he is though.

As for TV . The news suck and the shows glorify the queer. Who needs that ? I believe it to be the cause of major depression .

Funny all the anti depressant commercials between the garbage.

It is not funny ... or coincidental.
A people mired in there own vanity and addicted to being "taken care of".
Are easily enslaved.
There is no cohesive property in immorality.
It destroys family ( as it almost did mine ) it destroys countries, and people.

A people whom seek morality are more cohesive, and much more difficult to subjugate.

The theme is easy to see in most every show and advertisement.

Women smart, man dumb.
Children smart, parents dumb.
Spend your borrowed money on the frivolous.
f**k everyone and anyone until you loss all sense of self.
( the promise of sex sell everything from white teeth to black panties )
Bow down to the government.
Go ask your doctor.

And people wonder why the Muslim population " think " we are the great satan ??

Who's morality? Yours? The bible? The bible and the koran have screwed people up for generations. Some good stories. Some messed up ones.

Television has ALWAYS been a lowbrow medium, appealing to the lowest common denominator. There ARE exceptions of really good TV shows. But, they are few and far in-between.

I love Nova (the science show on PBS). I like to watch Judge Judy tear up some idiot. I also love Adult Swim and even Operation Repo. But the majority of TV is made for people who don't like to think.
