It's because it's a slap in the face to me as an artist with 33 years of experience to have someone ask me to PAY to play for them. It is now. It was 10 years ago. And it will always be.

Just because the industry went from paying artists to asking them to pay doesn't make it right, or a norm... YOU make it a norm by throwing in to them.
If they want to eliminate the "riff raff" (whatever the hell that means) charging $30 will only cull the poorer artists from the running.

If Eric Clapton wants me to play for him, unless he's asking to consider hiring or investing in me personally... well I'll be happy to go to him and perform. If he asked me to be one of thousands auditioning and to pay him $30... I'd tell him to shove it.

If you don't understand that then you not an artist or a seasoned professional IMHO.

I don't care for entities like this or Reverb(revenue)nation because they play on (cash in on) an artist's dreams and desires.

Can you imagine how much money these companies acquire from admissions?
I don't think 1000 admissions per filled slot is out of the realm of possibilities, considering that in the year 2000 there were well over 10,000 bands from my state (Ky) alone just on myspace .

Sound a lil more business and less opportunity under that perspective?

I've made a whole FOUR CENTS on Reverbnation! Wow! Maybe in a couple months I'll have enough to buy a gumball from a dispenser!

The music industry makes shitloads of money...for other people besides artists. It has always been a racket run by parasites. Occasionally, a few bands are successful enough to earn a decent living. When "pay-to-play" started that should have been a sign as to how emboldened these scum get and how much contempt they really have for musicians. IMO.

I've already paid... 33 years. Now I get paid to play, or I do it for my own enjoyment... you wanna hear me play live, pay me or become one o my friends. Period!
You wanna hear me play for free... go to myspace, ezfolk, reverbnation or here.

yea dam'it, Why do I have to pay Pit fees to race at the local dirt track. If I lose I'm out $20.00, If I win, whoo hoo $800.00. I think I will try harder.

Or its kind of like, keeping the weird and riff raft from wasting all your time for nothing.

If I was in the area I would do it just for fun and information, and I would also play my heart out. But I guess some people need that case of beer or the six packs of cigs. Why are ya all giving this group crap over $30.00. Just a question, inquiring minds want to know.

Smacks of usurper-ism.
Not the $30.00 for what it represents.
The stench of the principal, or total lack thereof.

I could set my amp up in the middle of the street to play an audition.
Paying for the use of a dirt track facility ??
Apples and oranges IMO.
