So...

Cons:
- Too much with the lightning licks
- A lot of musical cliches
- It was way too long.

Pros:
- It wasn't as sloppy as all that. Not sloppy, really.
- You didn't cave under the pressure of a stupid situation.
- There was plenty of showmanship
- You stayed right in the "eighties" mode, start to finish.

I think the pros outweigh the cons. And the crowd apparently agreed.

But it coulda been a disaster and your band owes you big time!

Having said all this, I wouldn't have been above doing much the same thing to you if you were in my band. Especially if I thought you tended to underestimate your own playing.

:D :D :D :D :D

OMG..you hit it on the head! waaaaaayyyy too long...... waaaayyy too many ,I call them, "Speed" licks and of course the cliches because I just pulled sh¡t out of my brain last minute, end of the evening, worn out to all living hell!

and again...let me remind you guys, this is more of a dance type band....they get many party gigs and stuff so who would've thought they'd even want this type of solo in their venue??

Oh well...It was New Years Eve, We had a blast and kept the crowd there till the bitter end so it all ended up OK... except for the part where I had to break down my stuff and bring it all in the house at about 5:30 AM.... Having the alarm set for 7:30AM to pick up the kiddies

I would hate to have to do enduring speed licks for that long.

I'm not as fast as you at speed licks in the first place, but I know my finger strength would be sh*t after that.

I'd give em each a punch in the stomach.

Pretty good under the circumstances.
Some times I kill it when it just improve, some times it's a train wreck.

If they said 80's style solo, I wouldn't do that well.

Dewy wrote:Its Improv... there is no warning, and the training is the riffs you do when your stretching in new strings.

It is bits and pieces that inspired you to play guitar, you cut into the inner musician and let them bleed out if the instrument onto the soundstage.

You did fine by the way. I personally would back off the speed a bit, you have it, but the tastiest stuff (and crowd response) was the melodies and tight riffs as opposed to the "Shredding". But that's a taste issue and to each their own.

+1 to the passed the audition.

Ditto. The key words in this inciteful analysis is "tastiest stuff (and crowd response)". You don't have to shred to get an emotional response from your audience.
You did a great job shredding AND getting an emotional response. AND even BETTER you IMPROVISED the whole thing. This shows you don't have to play a cover tune note-for-note to please the crowd. I believe your band members were testing your ability to get the crowd to respond. Looks like you succeeded on all accounts...

Actually that is where folks need to be diversified. Try to be "a type" of band and you will find yourself in a rowdy crowd calling for some other type of music than "your style".

So, lucky they had you since that's what the crowd was craving, and good of you to serve up the red meat of music, the guitar solo!!

this inciteful analysis

You flatter me sir... please, continue.

Man I can download any cover I right from iTunes, but to see a musician pull off some extraordinary playing at the drop of a hat, now that’s a magic show worth going to see. The funny part was the rest of the band wasn’t going to let you off the hook either. Strangely enough it started sparsely related and got more cohesive as you went along, instead of running low on ideas or directions, it seems you didn’t get really rolling until almost two minutes in. A little harsher then my preference, but it really doesn’t matter since the speed was unreal. 8)

Seriously though if they pull a stunt like that again, a requirement would have to be to see you hands. Seeing what was actually being played, would have added another dimension of showmanship. Great job Crip and most of all, having fun while doing it, combine it with modesty and that’s while you’ll always improve. Of all those guys who thought they were great at twenty, most would have conceded to their limitations by now. Five years from now, I can’t imagine how great it’s going to sound. :)

You should not be surprised Kerry.
Perhaps if you were doing a written solo, opinions would have been harsher.
But you pulled that one out of your hat with no notice & the crowd loved it.

What more can anyone ask from a solo ??

Great job but $20 from each I'd say, huh?
