For what it's worth I thought I might weigh in on this topic. For myself songs begin in one of several ways. The most enjoyable method I call the "bolt of lightning" . They are songs that just appear out of nowhere while driving or in the shower, usually places not conducive to getting the ideas down. I will pull the car over or run soaking wet to find paper and scribble what comes to me. Most of the time I have no idea what it's about it just keeps coming. I will then go back the next day and record the song and see what it all means. This is my favorite way of creating. The second method I will call "cognitive construction" I have an idea, perhaps a few lyrics or some rough melody and I sit down and construct a song from the pieces. Unlike the previous method, I am aware of what I'm doing, I work out verses and choruses, try different keys etc. The third is what I call "jam until something forms or you get to tired to care" This usually involves a drum loop. I just find a pattern and play over it. Sometimes something comes out of it that can evolve into a song, at other times they remain fragments that litter my hard drives. It is the least rewarding way I write. I prefer the first method because in most cases it is something from deep in the recesses of my mind, perhaps working out a problem or emotion, so it is personal and rewarding. And it cost less than therapy!
Have fun and keep on writing YOUR songs however you do it.....
