Reverbnation just sent me an invite to apply for one of the 150 slots for the Hollywood Music Awards.
But - you know what - if I GET one of those slots - I can't afford to fly out to Hollywood to perform!
Anyone else run into this kind of thing, where they can't afford success?

Yeah, and Reverbnation and other sites like it are beginning to piss me off with that. They want like $30 per submission and I'm thinking, these guys are making bank. I get these submission requests almost daily from them, and when you think about it. the music awards show couldn't be relying solely on Reverbnation to fill their artist roster.

I fell for this with the OC Music Awards and when I looked at the bands who were picked, based on you having to go through a secondary process of having all your friends vote on you, this isn't based on musical talent, it's based on who has the most friends. If you're an artist just starting out and trying to create a buzz for yourself, you are sh*t out of luck.

I prefer to save my money and try another route.

Apply....if you get called, find someone who will put up the cost of getting out there, on spec. Offer him/her 100% return over the cost (he'll double his money) if things work out for you. Zero if it doesn't. Most times in life, you don't get what you don't ask for. Find out what the "catch" is first. This sounds like a "Publisher's Clearing House" sweepstakes.

The old saying goes: it takes money to make money. A better bet would be to take that money, press up a decent CD and mail to everyone in the online Musician's Bibles.

You just have to be better than most applicants - all but 150 of them . . .
A good friend of mine did apply, and performed at this show 2 years ago; she looked grreat in her gown - got the red carpet treatment, lotta photographs . . . LOTS of publicity . . .

My exact question also Hayden. What was her " take home " from the deal.
I can get exposure by standing naked on my porch.
Did she "profit monetarily", or did the trip just cost her money ??

Not trying to be facetious. This to me is an important distinction if your in the business to profit.

Well if it doesn't cost anything, if you want to take the chance, go for it. I hate to be negative about these things, but I'm so over them. I'd just rather get the band together and play the usual clubs and get a following. If I can build myself a pretty impressive enough resume, then maybe they'll call me. I've yet to have someone come to me and say they got something out of it. The people who I know with very successful bands, who tour and actually make money, you never see them at these things. And when they say it's industry folk, it's usually a bunch of has-beens who haven't done anything noteworthy in over 15 years, which in this business means, they don't have any more clout than we do.

There is no quit in a winner, they also wont waste any more precious time once they determine an activity is ineffective in reaching their desired goals.

Don't sweat it. These Music Awards events can be found in nearly every major city in the US. While Hollywood does have a nice ring to it I would be surprised if it was any more or less of a "path to success" than the one within an hours drive from your house. This is essentially a showcase. A pay to play contest. It might be a fun experience but don't expect Sony to be handing out 7 year recording contracts.
