Although I'm still looking to form one band, I'm still hoping to get 2 going...maybeee 3. Am I greedy?

I used to think it was an abomination if one of the members in my band found another project(the loyalty factor being breached) with the fear of that person finding more interest in the other project. Now, I see things more openly, I suppose.

Who here usually has been in more than one band? Who here now has more than one? Who here chooses to be in just the one they have now? Who here is pissed because they're still looking for a band?

Nah. It has kind of become the norm for serious musicians to have multiple projects going at once. Around here, drummers especially.

It is normal to be jealous of someone else f**k your girlfriend. Threesomes are normal too.

I kinda joined another band to get a drummer for mine. We made a deal where I play bass for them if she plays drums for us. Turns out she and my keyboardist / guitarist already knew each other...and may actually be related. (Cue "Twilight Zone" theme)

I don't think it's greedy. Years ago, I played bass in on band, guitar in a second one, and keys in a third. That was a brief experience, though.

Why do you want more than one band? Is it to play different genres? It would seem odd to play in two similar styled bands-who will ultimately end up competing with each other.

It's often been said that when successful musicians do side projects it's because they aren't satisfied with what they are currently doing...If you don't have a band yet (and you will), but you are already looking to go a different direction, that's suggests to me that you are bracing yourself for disappointment.
In other words: Before you've even started, you think that the first band isn't going to live up to your expectations. Make sense?

I also think you have to look at the perspective of prospective bandmates. While I think it's fine to keep your options open, if they sense that you are less than commited to the project, they are probably gonna be less than commited to you. You might want to keep your multiple band desires under your hat, so to speak.

I have been in 3 bands at once. I got fired from one because of it. I was also working as a solo at the same time.

Most of the time, there will eventually be scheduling overlaps which cause problems, from what I've seen. In my case, there were two guys booking the bands without keeping me informed, & when I chose one over the other...well...they got a lil PO'd.

It wasn't a "loyalty factor," in MY mind, cuz they were all such different acts - one was bluegrass, one was rockabilly, then there was the hippie jam band & as a solo, I'm fairly folkish.

At the moment, I'm STILL looking to replace a guitar player who chooses to be less than involved with the one band I'm in, & I'm readying myself to get back into the solo scene, while I have an audition for a blues band this morning.

I'm seriously PO'd that I haven't been able to find a suitable guitarist for the one band I'm in.

I don't think I'd try to be in more than 2, ever again. It just gets too complicated trying to keep everyone abreast of one's schedule.

Not greed, it just means you haven't found the project that satisfies you yet.

I've been in 2 or 3 different projects at the same time before but I always think of The Farleys as my main project. If you can focus on one band it will make that band that much better.

The one project I have is more than enough.

It's more than a band. It's a life style. Playing, practicing, rehearsing, writing, up dating, printing, planning, advertising, recording, video, audio, maintenance.

I could continue but the point is belabored enough.


No way I could do more and maintain gainful employment, marriage, and a family.

I'm looking for that one band that fits, that I can dedicate myself to. But, I wouldn't mind having something to experiment with and play a different instrument for the heck of it. The side project is just something I could knock around with, and at the same time not take too seriously. With that said, I would hope that the members wouldn't take it seriously either.

I wouldn't want to jinx the whole experience and have the mistress favored by people over my main squeeze. If that happened, I would probably just end up recording myself again. We'll see what's in store down the road.

One band at a time for me, don't like conflicts AT ALL.

I was in 3 bands at once. I gigged all 3 in a row on the same night. I got paid more than anybody that night!
Now I'm lucky to get time to record.
But I'm way happier than ever!

I've been thinking about this, and I've come to the conclusion that I will be pretty fortunate when I get to play in another band again. There's just no way I would jeaporadize losing something so valuable when it took so long to get it. One band really is good enough if it's satisfying.

Could just be me man, but if your not going to take a project seriously ... why take it at all ?

I'm just psycho about pretty much everything I do. Hell if I'm digging a hole to bury a dead cat, it's going to be the best damn hole you every saw.

In my honest opinion you must have more than one group, ensemble going. It's good for the chops and it is an opportunity to get to know your local musicians and abilities. Plus I have more than one musical interest so there is no way I can be in one group.

Eh, wouldn't you rather have ONE band that you are dedicated to AND be able to have fun with it? I'm not sure why there has to be a separation between the two...
