You can turn that aorund the other way and say Paul Gilbert is no John Mayer either.

Its all in what your taste are, I like Mayer cause in spite of his "POP" success he still releases things that make someone like me interested, and if you look hes always playing wiht the greats, people like Clapton and others. Hes gained thier respect.

I like Paul Gilbert too, hes great in his own right so no direspect to him either!

Yeah, it just depends on who's style you prefer. They're both incredibly good, and they both have a few styles to say the least.

The whole Pop thing about Mayer doesen't bother me at all like it does some people. Popularity seems like a bad word these days.

He's definitely an awesome player, if he could just STFU about certain things, he'd be even better.

I'm sorry guys but I just don't get it?!

I don't see anything amazing in his playing anymore than I see it in Clapton's.

I personally know at least a dozen guitarists that would quite simply smoke both o their asses!
As one whom is into expression rather than "look what I can do" I do see what your saying, but I just don't see what you guys see. I guess it's just a matter of personal taste.

I have a couple of videos from PBS with Mayer and Buddy Guy sitting in. Mayer's pop stuff is ok, some it is decent, some I can't stand, a couple I do like pretty well.

But when he kicks into blues, the guy just plays the living hell out of a guitar. Absolutely great guitar player. Say what you want about his pop stuff, his public comments etc, he also played metal in his beginnings, and can cover several styles really well, but he just shines on blues.

I guess I just never liked him enough to bother checking much of his work out. A lot of my friends think he's the poop. Maybe I'll look into him some more.

Hayden - Check out this vid, this is from the Soundstage show someone stole from me a while back, (I recognized it when he half-sang "I told you I would mess it up"...) I really miss that video...he had Buddy Guy out later, excellent show. But check out the solo in this clip. You'll be convinced this guy can really play...

Found this one too, I think from the same Soundstage show. John Mayer & Buddy Guy, Feels Like Rain...great stuff.

Again....It's not that he's not good...

It's just I hate the stuff he does....

It just sounds so bland with no melody, even his blues riffs are bland.
And I don't even want to get into his lyrics
And then you add all the sh#t he talks and it's just not a good mix for me.

He seems to represent what I don't like about pop music these days.....
But that's just My opinion....

I can follow your thinking on all of that. Don't agree about the bland part but sure I can follow your thought process.

Then I read this and I am like WHAT?! Which part don't you like? That he sings his butt off WITHOUT autotune? Or is it the fact that he actually plays an instrument period? Or is it the fact that his instrument is the most important one in the band? Or is it the fact that even if he couldn't sing he could play rhythm or lead and any number of big league bands? Or is it the fact that he is no one trick pony with one genre? Or is it the fact that his music is not canned - it's organic? That just makes no sense to me. If you don't like his music from a musical standpoint cool. But to say he represents what you don't like about pop music?!

Try not liking music made with only computers using a girl with a pretty face and a mediocre voice that has been autotuned to "perfection". That's something to actually have a beef with.

I mean I don't love him, he's not on my ipod, but he plays his instrument... well... and writes and sings. He is diverse. He has credibility.

gtZip - That whole show was amazing. He was in very good shape that night, his playing the whole time was just excellent. The other video I had (also loaned to the same guy who never brought either back) was with the Double Trouble rhythm section and Buddy Guy at Austin City Limits. Another excellent show. I couldn't find any of those on youtube, sure wish I could. He and Buddy Guy did a killer version of "Don't Mess With My Girlfriend" that night. And some other stuff but all good.
