I just wish there was melody involved somehow...

No melody involved is the main reason people don't like rap but what y'all don't realize is that rap can be creative and artistic. It has it's place in many musical forms and believe it or not, the first rap I ever heard was in opera. It was discussed in a music appreciation class I was in in the 70s. I was in highschool and took the class as a college-prep course.
Mother GOose was a very good rap artist. My favorite Mother GOose rap is Little Boy Blue. I use it a lot to teach kids and adults abut rap. I wish this poem was longer, actually. Anytime my kids would play a rap thingy in the car, I would also throw in "Little Boy Blue" just to crack them up. In my opinion it does take talent to rap.I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like it Sam I am.

It doesn't take talent to do it badly. But, you could say that about anything. Eg. most white people can't rap well.

But rap is usually considered bad no matter who does it. If it is done by a good rapper, it is considered bad. If done by a bad rapper, it is even worse.

Here is something I found interesting.

By that definition an instrumental blues song is not music. This is a losing battle here but to reiterate IT HAS to be music. There are almost always instruments with chord progressions and melodies. Almost all rap has rapping verses with singing choruses, many have melodies interspersed in the rapping itself.

I agree Neander...Rap is music. It must have a melody and basically there is nothing different between rap verses and lyrics. It has rhythm, it has rhyme. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is a song but you can easily make it into a rap by simply not singing it.

It is an art form that's probably older than music as we know it. It may even be a precurser to western music.

I would say that it's a performance art, but I can understand when ppl claim it is music.

I would readily admit that it takes work, a quick mind, & yes, even talent, too.

Various rappers have given rap a bad name...They can't even come up with there own songs to mix with their raps...often borrowing familiar songs of more imaginative musicians. But, when rap is presented artfully and skillfully I really like it. Aren't Gregorian chants borderline raps?

There's a lot of good messages in Hip Hop, especially from the early days. Hip Hop is honest, and at times, grimy, cause it's from the streets. A lot of it comes from a place where either you have a hustle( rap being one) or you're just dirt poor. Hip Hop sprouted as a counter culture birthed from society.

Like it or not, this art form takes confidence to pull off, as well as quick thinking. Of course, people are always going to jump on the bandwagon and give it a bad name. And some, will try to re-write it.

I don't personally like any kind of Rap-Rock, but a good majority of the masses do. It's hard to adapt when you're stuck in your ways.

People said that Hardcore Punk wasn't music either. Funny how it became one of the most influencial sub-genres today, and the reason many forms of Rock and Metal survived.

If I was a betting man (I'm not) I would bet rap is going away just like rock and roll. It's not.

Here is a perfect example that you don't have to click a link for to prove my point that rap is music and requires talent. You don't have to click the link because I bet everybody in this discussion has heard it. Marky Mark and the funky bunch - good vibrations. Mark Wahlburg went on to be a successful actor. That huge hit combined the rapping verses, beats, huge piano hooks and chord progressions, a melodious piano solo, and a powerhouse female vocalist killing it with a memorable hook laden chorus! I heard it today on the radio and thought of this thread. It by definition is music. It shows lots of talent in arrangement, performance on many levels, and production. It was out like 20 years ago. I would rather hear that than nickel back for instance any day. It's actually a good song.

I like the sound of some of his rapping. That is clearly chord progressions, beats, etc. It has to be music. I don't like this song though. He really made/is making his mark in music history.

Yeah not his best but I used that because it's clearly a composition.
