Myself i put songs together both ways
some times i write the lyrics and music together in my head
Its funny because i get a melody in my head and then i start putting words to it and then i start putting all the insturments to it all in my head then i go to my studio and record it ,put all guitars & bass to it then put the drum parts in

I think everyone is influenced in one way or another when it comes to what they write. I mean, its all been done before, I guess the trick is to re-invent it or make it sound brand new. Being that everything in the creative world is endless, one can take what they hear and give maybe a different spin on it. For better or for worse we hear bad imitations of what we like and sometimes rather good if not better versions of style we like..again, the personal spin giving it that new spin on an old style.

My influences are my teachers and hopefully Ive created something as interesting or maybe dare I say "better" or at least "good" or listenable...I know, I ramble, but creativity is the key here.

regards
