What I've been hearing in the last 10 years or so, is that a LOT of attention being paid to the lyrics; too much, maybe.
.
See - not enough attention is being paid to the music over which the lyrics are being draped.
.
And - yeah, of course lyrics are important.
But no one wants to listen to great lyrics in a crummy song.
The lyrics AND the music must be great - or even just good . .. or, at least fair . . .
Hey, I teach guitar, and I talk to other guitar instructors . . .
And a LOT of the songs that are popular nowadays can be taught to a beginning guitarist - even an 8 year old - in only a few lessons.

Hey, let's he honest, and just admit that a lot of today's popular music is, . . . ummm - 'less-than-challenging.'
That was not always the case.
Go back 25 years - before many of the current bandmix members were even born - and the music was ALSO great.
And to learn to play many of the popular songs back then - took work.

Yeah, sure - there were a lot of simple 4 chord songs back then, too.
But, frequently back then, if you learned a cover song, you knew you'd accomplished something.

Nowadays - well, no doubt, there are still great songs being written and performed, but for the rest (a large part of what's on TV or the radio, for example: Pfffft!
