I like to be able to understand the lyrics as they are sung.

The reality of it is that sometimes after you find out what the lyrics are, you no longer appreciate the song.

JUDITH by A Perfect Circle is that way for me.

I liked the tune but once I read the lyrics online, that was it.

As she lays there, golden blond hair on my arm.
I must confess I admire how she hides her frailty
I can never know her pain,
I hope I’m never her pain .

What I've been hearing in the last 10 years or so, is that a LOT of attention being paid to the lyrics; too much, maybe.
.
See - not enough attention is being paid to the music over which the lyrics are being draped.
.

And - yeah, of course lyrics are important.
But no one wants to listen to great lyrics in a crummy song.
The lyrics AND the music must be great - or even just good . .. or, at least fair . . .
Hey, I teach guitar, and I talk to other guitar instructors . . .
And a LOT of the songs that are popular nowadays can be taught to a beginning guitarist - even an 8 year old - in only a few lessons.
.
Hey, let's he honest, and just admit that a lot of today's popular music is, . . . ummm - 'less-than-challenging.'
That was not always the case.
Go back 25 years - before many of the current bandmix members were even born - and the music was ALSO great.
And to learn to play many of the popular songs back then - took work.
.
Yeah, sure - there were a lot of simple 4 chord songs back then, too.
But, frequently back then, if you learned a cover song, you knew you'd accomplished something.
.
Nowadays - well, no doubt, there are still great songs being written and performed, but for the rest (a large part of what's on TV or the radio, for example: Pfffft!
