+1 for Reaper.

Cakewalk is offereing some good options coming Dec. 8 with the new Sonar X1 release.

Also....There are many pices of recording gear that come with recording software....cubase LE, ableton Live lite, etc.

So if you need a controller or something you can get 2 birds with one stone.

+1 for Reaper.

http://www.reaper.fm/

And if you buy the personal license for it, it's actually $40 at the moment (until they release v4 sometime early 2011 when the license will increase to $60). Your $40 investment now also entitles you to a free V4 upgrade, so it's money well-spent.

If you are looking for cheap, Audacity +2

I think I have Reaper currently installed beside Audacity, but its been a while since I messed with either one.

Okay, as you know, there are quite a few packages out there for digital recording. I have a very basic Cubase LE and have had Cakewalk. When I was using a Macintosh, I used digital performer. All of them will give you the same basic results and depending on the speed of your processor, most will be able to handle about as many tracks as you wish.

If you are new to PC/Mac recording, then you may wish to avoid the Cubase LE product. It's not because Cubase doesn't work well rather, it's because if you decide Cubase LE is best you will get zero customer support. I mean zero. I purchased the Tascam USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI interface and Cubase LE came with it. Not only did it take me many attempts to register, it also was a real bitch getting MIDI to work. It wasn't until I purchased Cakewalk that I was able to get everything working on Cubase. Funny thing don't you think. It ended up that a "bit" that I was able to flip while setting up Cakewalk actually turned Cubase LE's MIDI on.

Anyway, Cubase LE was described by a salesman at Sweetwater as a throw away. He said that their hope was that a number of LE users would actually decide to spend the price of Cubase's higher end packages for which they do offer customer support.

One thing you have to remember is that Cubase is written by a bunch of Europeans and therefore, they hold a well honed contempt for we who are over the pond.

After a lot of hard work and a s*it load of reading, I have been able to get Cubase LE to work.

Good luck,
I hope that helps.
Kevin

I will also note Audacity .. So it seems as far as under $150 and fitting needs. The free Audacity wins. Which means you can buy a round of beers for your mates, and still record -heh-
