You might try jamming with them.

I just met a band that I thought was going to be a good deal.
So good in fact, I was considering playing bass to just get things to solidify.

I went to jam with them and they were awful. They had ZERO stage presence, couldn't play their own material all the way through and had equipment that was basically not enough to do the job at hand.

They had well produced recordings and a video as well.

After we jammed, I had to politely excuse myself or run away horrified at how bad they really were.

Nothing and I repeat, NOTHING substitutes for an in-person meeting with band mates, followed by playing the material or jamming to see if they are "worth the trip". This is why I like the OPEN MIC. No Excuses, no bullshit, no kidding.
