Yeah, but is it studio magic or are the performances on video? Not to say he is a bad picker, but certainly not my idea of a really good picker.
Everyone sounds killer on their recordings these days. But he has never impressed me as a guitar player when I have seen him perform live. Not on Sound Stage, Austin City Limits, or on any appearances on talk or morning shows. If it doesn't show up in a live performance I have a hard time believing that it changes in a studio.
A lot of musicians have come out with killer studio recordings, and when they perform them live they aren't even close. We have all experienced that. Brad Paisley is a good picker. He did a song called "Me Neither" that had a to die for instrumental ride in it and I was amazed at how clean and accurate it was. To say nothing about the skill level it took to pull it off. I longed for the day I could see that done live on a video performance.
When I saw them on Austin city Limits, they played that song. The stellar instrumental performances had disappeared and were replaced with some rather mediocre riffs that were about 6 skill levels above pathetic. What a let down that was.
On the other hand I have seen other pickers live that smoked with every live performance. Now I know those dudes are what they claim to be on a recording.
