Just set up a computer with a few programs. I use Sonar 4 and Cool edit. Something like that and a reasonable inexpensive sound card and you are in business. I have seen 8 track sound cards go for as little as $299 before. I have some far newer and way more expensive programs that I don't use just because those do the job for me.
And if you are just going to work it all on your own recording 1 to 2 tracks at a time, you can get by even cheaper. Most cards are 24/192 now. That is FAR beyond a standard CD. And even with your el-cheapo computer built in sound card, you can still record CD quality. They just are a bit noisier because of system noise.
