I used to live in Raffman Lake and every year they stock their own trout. So one night I go down to fish off the dock. I’m not huge into fishing, just that it’s relaxing on occasion, bass, trout whatever, is fine since I don’t eat fish anyway. They are using corn buoyed with marshmallows. Strange combo, wouldn’t think fish would like corn and marshmallows. Anyway not really caring I cast a red devil spoon out and I guy laughs at me and yells: “You ain’t going to catch anything with that!” Immediately right on cue, a large brown trout nails the lure, I real him in, unhook and release him with a smug smile. Then shook my head like I knew what I was doing, picked up my stuff and went back home. 8)

Spruce run is really nice, taught my wife to ride bikes in that parking lot.

Growing up, I was a big-time fisherman. It's all I cared about for recreation, and I would take my pole no matter where we lived, and walk around till I found a lake or river to fish in. Luckily in Jacksonville (The River City) there were plenty! My grandfather took me fishing one day, and after hours, we hadn't caught ANYTHING big enough to bring home. He stopped by the fish-store on the way home, and looked over and winked at me, while he told my grandmother we had caught it! :-)

Another cute story, was when I was fishing in a small inlet, and a cop came by, and asked if I had caught anything. I was a small boy, maybe 9 years old at the time. Fishing alone there. I was leaned back against a sign while I fished. The cop just smiled, told me good luck, and drove off. Believe it or not... only decades later, as an adult, did I bother to read that sign, when I was showing the spot to my step kids. I had to smile, when I read it, and it said... "No Fishing!" :-) I know darn well that cop saw the sign clearly, as it was facing the road, and I was leaning on it, while he talked to me. Very cool officer! It must have looked like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting... a little boy, leaning on a "No Fishing" sign, while fishing away happily! ;-)

those are probably the best fishing stories posted yet :D

But don't mention Jacksonville, I just had to drive there and back from Tampa. I got lost and almost drove to Georgia, before, I realized it, and had to work my way back. :x

Spring of '09 I bought a 15 ft canoe for $100. I got some paddles, a fishing license & supplies, grabbed my 26 yr old son to go out on the creek.

We got there, & he helped me take the canoe off the Jeep, then stood there with the bait in his hand while I loaded all the supplies into the canoe. I moved & locked the Jeep, & got in the boat. When he got in, I shoved off, & then, as the current swept us downstream, I told him to go back & get the paddles. heh heh heh

We went quite a ways downstream. Next thing I knew we were in the river. I didn't know where to go downstream, but I knew a place upstream. Problem was I didn't know how far it would be to get there. We started paddling upstream. We put everything we had into it for a good 20 minutes, when I looked over to see that we were in the same frikken spot.

We gave up & went downstream, & eventually ran ashore in this lil development. In all, we were in that canoe for 10 hours without food or water, we caught NO fish, but we had a helluva good time laughing at our own stupidities. Great father-son bonding going on there, folks.

Next, we went farther upstream in that same creek. We rolled the damned canoe 3 times, caught no fish, & I lost my cell phone on that trip.

Since then, we've gotten pretty good at the canoing thing, but we mostly stay on the local lakes. I catch more fish these days, too, thanks to bob & other ppl's o/l tutoring.

I was hoping for one of those cool new kayaks for fathers day, but with all the stuff going on it wasn't gonna happen, I guess. I'm gonna get one, though, cuz they weigh like 40 lbs & I wanna take it out by myself & have a good time. Having to take other ppl sucks sometimes!

Canoeing solo ain't so bad as long as your craft is not too heavy to load and unload.
A great canoeing trick with moving waters is to have your vehicle down stream at a pre scouted egress point and have a friend drop you off at your ingress upstream.

Yeah, I've done that, & its fun, but I hate lugging that frikken 100 lb canoe by myself. Those lil flat-bottom kayaks look so cute! I have GOT to get me one!

Truth be told I've been coping a feel on those in the store for about three years. I like the look of the ones that have some gunwale and storage space. The open top versions look a little too Moccasin friendly.
If you know what I mean.

I've used a good stout paddle on more than one in areas I'm not allowed to carry my S&W.

Rattlesnake ain't bad fried. Water Moccasins around here stink too bad for me to even consider cleaning.

More proof that you need to work a fishing hole hard: We went to one of our favorite lakes Sunday and the first place we checked out looked fishy. We were after big bluegill (one of my favorite fish to catch) and it was right before a cold front and right after a full moon. There was some frothy bubbles and foam along the shore, a sure sign of spawning bluegills. I started using one of my favorite lures, a Mepps XD spinner with black body and gold blade. I made numerous casts for about a half hour with absolutely no luck. When I change lures I always go opposite in color so I put on a Mepps Aglia size 0 with silver blade and red wooly worm. First cast I catch a HUGE bluegill, then within an hour we've got a cooler full of big bluegills and a few small bass. I also caught a few big gills on a tiny Black Fury size 00 with orange spots and orange feather on single hook. Even if you're having success on a particular lure switch up occasionally, there'll be a few fish that won't hit that color.

You would love the Rainbow River in Florida. We catch bluegills that are huge. My favorite lure for them on ultralight tackle is the Beetle Spin. They also catch bass.

I'm going tubing there in about two weeks..lol it beautiful beyond reason there, I've seen huge bass sitting down on the bottom, ignoring the tubers 20 feet above them..I imagine you'd have to use very light gear in that clear water tho..never had the chance to fish there, only swim.

The Rainbow is famous for trophy bass. They don't even brag about anything under 10#.

The best way to get the monster bass in the Rainbow is to use wild shiners - some of them weigh in at a pound, and they are about a foot long.

The owner is a guy named Jon Semmes. He's a musician as well, and runs "Singing River" cruises on the river, and the Blue Gator Tiki Bar there at the resort.

Tell him Bob & Penny from the NightOwls (our old name) said hello. He hates our guts. We beat him out at an audition once.
