Paul, it really is nice to play with such talented musicians. When I wrote this song, it was just me and an acoustic guitar. To hear the song come to full life with the band just blows me away.
Phil.. In Reggae, if you go too far into left field with bridges, people stop moving and start standing still. It's just the nature of the genre to keep a steady rhythm throughout the song as much as possible.. If people stop dancing in the middle of a song, then the general notion will be that you're not playing it right.
As far as the Babylon thing. Babylon itself in reference to Reggae and Rastafari is a broad term: From Wikipedia-"Anything that is a lie regarding the truth of God, is the actual root of what is considered "Babylon" by Rastafarians" . Given that kind of explanation, you can see why you'll hear that word a lot in Reggae. A lot of times in Reggae, it's in reference to this kind of explanation. - "Babylon is an important Rastafari term, referring to human government and institutions that are seen as in rebellion against the rule of JAH (God), beginning with the Tower of Babel."
In my writing, the song really has two parts to it. It's about letting the music move you with no inhibitions, no restraints, nothing to hold you back. Let your worries escape you for a while in a musical euphoria.
"Babylon no be comin' when we come around. Rasta Cut him down. With a spooky Roots Reggae sound. Nowhere to be found, no. Let this feeling take you to higher ground."
The other part of the song is about trusting in God (Jah) that he'll guide you through knowing what's right and wrong. And that too, will take you to that higher ground.
"Chant Jah Make us know our right from wrong. Say Jah make us see our way home. So Jah make us chase away Babylon. True Jah make us be strong. Let this feeling take you to higher ground. ".
"No law (Babylon) to restrain you. Feel the sound. Move you all around. From the sky down." (basically saying, by the power of God be moved by the music worry free.)
