I quit playing for about 25 years. None of my new friends had heard me play. When I got back into it, they were amazed at how quickly I learned..... so they thought.

I don't get a lot of respect on line either as most pickers are rockers. Maybe they respect my skill level but most musicians don't comment on other musicians music, for the most part. So what? That doesn't mean squat. I play for me. If someone else likes what I do, GREAT!! Just one comment by another musician is reward enough.

I had a ton of offers to play in bands when people heard me play again. But that will never happen, I had quit because I didn't like playing most covers all the time, or the drunks, or most of the places we gigged. It ruined music for me. I had become a guitar slut instead of a musician. That took the love of playing from me and was the reason I quit. So the point is this. What does any of that matter? I see a lot of guys playing clubs that just don't look like they are having that great of a time.

Do you play for the enjoyment of playing or for attention? I am as happy picking up a guitar and amusing myself in my bedroom as I would be on a stage somewhere. Yeah. The "box" says "I play for my own amusement"
Perhaps even happier because I can just get down wif my own bad self and not care about performance. For me, it's freedom not to have to play. Not to have to be somewhere. And not to have haul and set up my gear.

As far as this town, there have always been killer pickers lurking around every corner. One local band made it to American Bandstand with a national hit. Some made it big time like Tommy Bolin, but a lot of others who I considered better never went anywhere with their music. Tommy paid the price with a drug overdose. This town is pretty well known for good pickers. Rock, Jazz, Country, some in every genre have made to some point on the national level.

It takes time to find good musicians who want to jam , but they are around if you look. Take music for what it is. It is a gift to you, no one else. It's your baby. Love it, don't diss the part of it that doesn't go the way you want it to. Eventually that will leech into the part you enjoy. Don't look for financial rewards. Don't look to be a mega star even in a small town. Just love music for what it is, a very special skill not given to most.

Or learn to make really cool guitar faces and play air guitar. 8) They're the ones who are really appreciated now days.

Don't mind me, Glen. i was just in a-hole mode (getting ready to go to work- ).

You guys are right. I love music. Sometimes it's like being stuck in third grade...I'm passing all my classes, but I have to stay in the same place, because everyone in my class sucks. I'm ready to graduate, damn it!

Keep in mind that I've never really been a solo artist, per se. I've done some acoustic solo shows, but it's just not my thing. I love the creative end of music, and part of that creative process is the bass line. It's the keyboard part. It's the backing vocals, etc. I feel like when I strip all that away, I've lost 90% of the very thing I was enjoying.

So, yeah, I play for my own enjoyment, but it's the goal-oriented side of me that is suffering. I'm unfortunately reliant upon other people.

Anyway, thanks for the input, folks, and once again, Glen, sorry aout getting sh*tty with ya.

Joeseph no need to apologise in any way. You are one cool dude and good player. I just don't like the transfer of wealth that is going on in this country right now. You and I are paying for it. It is becoming a very frustrating thing for everyone because it is hidden in taxes in so many ways the citizen doesn't see.
Keep Playin man cause in the end that may be all that matters.

It should be!

Your songs are SINGER/SONGWRITER material, and you are a STORYTELLER!!! Being solo, you have NO OTHER BAND MEMBERS to worry about! You get ALL THE MONEY yourself from the show. No splitting equally, with people who don't CONTRIBUTE equally! You play under YOUR OWN NAME and build THAT NAME... YOUR NAME.. UP!

What are you afraid of?

It's a natural.

It is the solution to all your musical problems.

It is more profitable.

It is more dependable.

Someone significant sees you, and guess what? One talent, there by himself... easy to see you in whatever situation he is in need of... solo artist?... no problem... band? No problem... they want you to fire your band and put their own professionals around you anyway!

A solo act, you get to share one on one more easily with your audience. Tell them why you wrote the song, or share some anecdote that fits, before you play the song. Mix up storytelling in the songs, and in between, when you speak to the audience... tell them stories... make them laugh... make them cry... make them think!

Why can't you do that?

Why do you need a band to do that?

Play with some basic backing tracks if you want. Drums and bass.

I think you should build up a SOLO CAREER, and then you can write your own ticket where a band is concerned. You get the best experience in leading a band there is... being the entire show yourself first!

Then you can afford to add members as you choose, on YOUR TERMS.

Good luck whatever you choose, but.... These talents are a curse sometimes too! You can't just walk away... well... you can... but it will bring you right back before you know it.
