hahah i was born in texas so i feel i have a certain right. but my point wasnt texas it was as philby said idiotic to have one group of seemingly less than average intelligence educating our children. and as previously said i wish we would put more emphasis on creating scientific minds in our youth. the scientific method has brought us the only truths humanity knows and i would like nothing more to see that grow. who knows what we could accomplish if we stopped trying to find ways to let religion explain things, which in my opinion is the only reason for its conception in the first place.

I agree Rycky but I don't think you have to explain anything to J, you and Phil get a free pass because you're from a red state. I live in an evil blue state so I must bear the brunt.

No target on your back Jimmy. If at first you don't succeed try again remember? Maybe I am a little sensetive Jimmy as I have heard the hate on Texas my entire life. You see I have a problem when you take an entire state and just generalize all of the folks as a bunch of uneducated backwards folk. Yes I am a conservative and you lean toward the liberal side are both points of veiw perfect? No! Is Texas perfect No! Is Michigan perfect No! In spite of the fact you have riled my emotions on more than one occasion I still have respect for you and consider you a good guy! and a hell of a guitar player. Ricky it is obvious it has been a while since you have been to Texas. What town are you from? Texas has its backwoods side and I Love it! I am a city slicker from a city with a populus of probably 5 million. We have a heavy hispanic population here with a lot of illegals so no one really know's the exact population. Anyway I am no different from say someone from Detroit I just happen to have a different point of veiw than some. Us Texans are known to have a lot of pride but one thing that will never change as long as I draw breath is my ABSOLUTE LOVE! for the Lone Star State, jalapenos, cold beer, long hair, Armadillo eggs in the morning, Barbaque Brisket, cowboy boots, and Rock and Roll.

No problem J, you're one of the good guys. I get riled up when I hear talk of books getting banned, I guess I've read too much Ray Bradbury.

You know what Jimmy, Phil, and Rycky Tycky Tavi et al?

We can certainly find common ground in feeling anger, about people who seem to bury their heads in the sand, where scientific truths are concerned. But when some of you trash an entire state, and entire groups of people on a personal level, and make such broad, indefensible charges against whole populations, in the name of your belief in self-superiority, then you become just as extremist as those you oppose.

Are people in Texas and Georgia for example, more likely to view things through their religious and spiritual beliefs? Sure. And, this can lead to deficiencies on some issues, like acceptance of certain elements of evolution. But this is also a gift in many other areas. I can leave a bicycle or something I just bought from Walmart, in the back of an open pick-up in those places, and do so, much more safely than in Detroit, where you live, or in Washington, D.C. and New York (both of which I have lived in).

I can find a helping hand in one of those "backward" states far more quickly as well. Oh, and... I will likely NEVER have to worry, that animals will be given status next to humans, where the law and the court system is concerned, bringing a lawsuit against my human caregivers, etc... but a northern liberal state? We may very well see ANIMALS "testifying" in courts (through their lawyers) to defend their INDIVIDUAL "rights" as if they were human beings, one day soon.

Don't laugh.... LIBERAL DUMBASSES are working on this as we speak! Others are convinced that some forms of euthanasia are beneficial, to avoid UNWANTED "human" beings, like kids with mental retardation, or some form of handicap... as long as they are put to death before they are say... 1 and 1/2 YEARS OLD!!! Obama, like Kennedy, fought for a cabinet (and czars) filled with "The best and the brightest!" and he got that... and some of the liberal "brightest" he selected are actually PROPONENTS of the very things I just mentioned!

So, don't, FOR ONE MINUTE, smugly think that DUMBASSES are the exclusive domain of Conservatives or the populations of Southern States. On the contrary, liberals breed their own brand of IDIOTS, and to be honest... Theirs are FAR MORE SCARY cause they don't value human life consistently, and they don't believe as much in NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY!

At least the dumbasses around me, don't consider field mice, as equal in value to human beings, and due equal rights. At least the dumbasses around me, actually VALUE "ALL" human life, handicapped or not!

At least Southern "dumbasses" seem to understand that merely stepping foot on OUR SOIL, no more makes you a CITIZEN, than someone breaking into, and walking around... "YOUR HOUSE", makes that criminal, a CO-OWNER of YOUR house.

Liberals often think they are so profoundly intelligent, that they ignore BASIC TRUTHS that are sometimes FAR MORE IMPORTANT in life, than the most joyful of creative intellectual meanderings, which may serve no useful practical purpose at times.

If I had to choose a permanent community....

GIVE ME COMMON SENSE OVER SOMETIMES IRRATIONAL "INTELLECTUALISM"

GIVE ME DECENT AND COMPASSIONATE PEOPLE OVER ELITISTS AND THE EXTREMELY SELFISH!

Point taken Craig. Life here can be brutal, and you learn to grow a tough shell to protect yourself and those you love. This can make you cynical and short-tempered, especially when I hear of people banning books or making science a trivial pursuit. I have great respect for all of the states of this great country, but some of the people in those states are dumbasses, mine included. For example, I'm sure you have heard about the govenor of Virgina's latest faux pax. Did I rub your nose in it? No. I'm trying to bite my tongue even though I'd like to chew off some noses. So give me some credit, I could be much worse.

Jimmy, you beat me to the punch.

I was just coming here to apologize.

I realized I was reacting much like the behavior I was just criticising.

Sorry for that.

But truly, it is my firmly held belief that WE ARE ALL people of value, who bring DIFFERENT ATTRIBUTES to the table, and BOTH SIDES have valid points, and NEED... yes... NEED one another!

All the science in the world, is useless... or even dangerous, without the character to use it sensibly, and without the heart, to use it compassionately!

It's not that religious people have no brains, and it's not that scientifically minded people have no hearts... it is just, that EXTREMISM in any place, leads to disastrous results.

For me... SCIENCE has been concerned with the PHYSICAL pursuit of truth, whereas RELIGION has been concerned with the SPIRITUAL pursuit of truth.

My understanding... that we are BOTH physical -AND- spiritual beings, leads me to conclude that these two great fields of endeavor are BOTH NECESSARY, and should be COMPLIMENTARY, rather than in OPPOSITION!

One reveals PHYSICAL truths to us.

The other reveals SPIRITUAL truths to us.

Scientific truths can help refine incorrect religious dogma in some areas, or make religious ministries that much more effective (feeding the poor, medicine, etc..) but also, religious truths, can help guide scientific pursuits, such as reaching RESONABLE constraints on scientific pursuits. As someone mentioned earlier, BEING ABLE to do something, does not necessarily mean WE SHOULD do that thing.

I'm not trying to preach here.

Just to suggest, that Science -CAN- benefit from religion (conscientiousness) and Religion -CAN- benefit from Science (physical reality). Neither should be able to LORD OVER the other, or STIFLE the other, but -BOTH- should be able to INFORM and even CORRECT the other, through well meaning commentary or criticisms.

Apology, although not required, accepted and appreciated. I know we (Phil, J, Glen, Klug, etc) go rounds here but it seems that we mean well and can forgive easier than non-musicians can. The country is deeply hurting and we shouldn't add to it.

That really hurts, Craig, but only cuz it isn't true. Nowhere have I dissed Texas or any other state. In fact, I took the time to point out that the idjits who poisoned the Rio Grand prolly came from all over. Neither did I trash the whole of any religion. I don't think I've shown any sign of feelings of "self-superiority," either. *sniff*

My goodness! You love your glittering generalities! Please leave me out of them in the future!

I DO think it to be rather odd that one state chooses schoolbooks for the entire country. Truth be told, it isn't even the state doing it. It isn't like Texans are voting for which books to use in our nationwide curriculae. It's the school board of Texas, which narrows things even further. One small group of ppl do NOT represent the entire country, & while they may or may not be in total agreement with the rest of the country, either way, it's asking a bit much from the rest of us to accept this.

I want my grandson to at least have the chance to learn scientific truths & theories, cuz it might intrigue him enough to grow up to be that scientist who can further the cause of mankind, but the way things have been going, thanks to the decisions of these few, he may not get that chance.

Why not have a nationwide conference of educators choosing, instead, if you only wish to distribute a certain number of titles? Seems that would certainly better able our students to open thier minds to "new" ideas, like evolution & such (chuckles in a self-superiorly way!).

What in the HELL do you people base this f**k indoctrination of YOUR STATE EDUCATIONAL system on TEXAS FOR!

All I have to say is YOU FOLKS ARE SERIOUSLY MIS-INFORMED and damn it I have been DRANKIN!

First and formost I AM A f**k AMERICAN! Secondly I am a TEXAN!

Don't you folks know that EVERY STATE SETS THEIR OWN ACADEMIC STANDARDS! I WANT SO BAD TO CALL YA'LL SOMETHING ELSE BUT BECAUSE MY GOOD TEXAN SPIRIT WON'T ALLOW ME!

All I can say is if you decide that your state and city wants to beleive in science and evolution I applaud you! HEY I AM A SCIENCE NERD. But at the same time I would never want to indoctrinate my beleifs on some else because if I did I would be no better than OSAMA BIN LADEN!
