Effects of File Sharing

Hey guys, I'm new here so I hope this post is in the right forum?

Basically, I'm studying for an Honours degree in Creative Music Technology, and for my dissertation I've chosen to investigate how peer-to-peer file sharing has affected people working in various capacities in the music industry.

I was just wondering if any of you wouldn't mind taking a minute to fill in my questionnaires? They're only short, and it'd be a big help to me (Don’t forget to click “done” at the bottom).

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P2RNGND - This survey is aimed at people working in the industry as musicians, e.g. a gigging band, session musician etc.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KQQXC5Y - This survey is aimed at people recording or selling music, e.g. recording engineers, record company personnel, retail assistants etc.

Cheers in advance, your input would be MUCH appreciated :D

It helps make rappers rich and keep rock and metal musicians poor!

I probably would not have heard and bought as many albums if I had not taken to pirating. When I've got music out, I will encourage people to download my stuff to check it out. If you like it, buy it. If not, delete it off your hard drive and never listen again. If you really want to support the artist, buy their albums directly from them if possible, attend their shows, and buy a shirt or two. I have no problem with downloading or filesharing if my listeners support me in those ways.

I object to stealing.
If I spend countless hours composing recording and mixing a song, I don't want to give it away; I am due recompensation.

If this is your homework, why don't you go do it instead of trying to get others online to fill in your survey, so you can tabulate and quantify your results.

I'd say right off the bat your results will be skewed and your target demographic is off unless you are looking for something other than 18-35 males.

You know the world has gone to sh*t when the little queefs are posting their crap on yahoo answers looking for someone to do their homework because they wanna go out and smoke bowls and drink beers.

(nothing against adult bowl smokers/beer drinkers)

I was wondering if you were setting out to alienate off the majority of our nation.

Filesharing is a tool. Like a gun or a hammer... used indiscriminately it will do great damage.

In the hands of responsible persons it can do wonderful things. Filesharing is the "Poor Man's Distributor". Before if you had a CD or DVD of any content in New Jersey, the cost of its national or international distribution was very prohibitive.

Now, anyone can offer to their fans a file (hashcode) to download band related material... and how that hashcode is generated, what is in that file is entirely up to you.

Which will happen depends on the legitimacy of the practice. If its criminalized, more harm will come from it than good. (if guns are criminalized, only criminals will have guns, same argument)

My question is why do we only question the "effect" of filesharing, but never the effect of a powerful recording/distribution industry controlling "Art"?
