I mostly use a Peavey Combo 400. IT works for most venues & has a wide variety of tones if you tweak the lil knobs. It ain't too expensive, & you can prolly get a used one for less than $250.

If I were a gigging bassist and didn't want to lug a big amp, I would check out one of the kickback models. Hartke, Fender, and Behringer all make 'em and the prices vary. I've played with guys that use them (the Fender and Behringer, anyways) and they sounded great. You aim it up at yourself as your own personal bass monitor and run a line out to the board and get a good mix in the mains and everyone else can have what they want in the monitors.

A smaller ampeg combo.
I had a Hartke combo amp that I gave to a friend. I took the stock speaker out and put an EV speaker in it. It was a killer little rig. I wish I hadnt given it away.
I dont play bass much anymore, but when I do I take out my old Sunn Model T head and 4x12 cab. Works pretty good to me.

Look at a Carvin. I don't remember the model, but you get 600 watts for $600.00. A friend of mine has one and loves it

You cant go wrong with an Ampeg BA115. Portability, tone and it's an Ampeg!
