i was at a yardsale last summer and this guy was selling some music equiptment that his son didn't want anymore. i'm not a huge fan of boss pedals, but i had just moved and needed a distortion pedal to go with my fender twin reverb, since i wasn't able to bring my marshall half stack when i moved to michigan from oklahoma (not enough room). anyway, there wasn't a price on the pedal, so i asked the guy, expecting him to say 50 bucks, since all his stuff was overpriced. instead, he said "what's it worth to you?" and i said five bucks, and he thought that was great.

it's a boss metal zone, which isn't my flavor, but it's gotten me out of a bind a couple of times

Boss pedals are fckin steel though. You run em over and they'd still work.

Yeah, I'm slowly buying one at a time, and they rule... never had a boss pedal go bad. My danelectro EQ pedal just crapped out on me after only 6 months, replaced it with BOSS, and my god.. I didn't think an eq pedal mattered, so long as you got the gain... but that boss pedal adds so much more to the solos 8)

mistermikev wrote:My pleasure... I was amazed to learn how many od pedals today are based on a variation of that sm ts-808 circuit... many very expensive pedals (check out the CJOD, they've gone for $1600 on ebay and it's a tube screamer clone that is slightly modified).

Dude, I swear I could pick your brain about effects pedals all freakin day. I'd love to try to start building some of my own. I've gone through so many POS pedals in my lifetime!! Hahaha.

Some of my past zonkers include:

Electro Harmonix Tube-Q: What a total waste of $180. That pedal sucks ass. Especially for the price. It sounds extremely generic. The only useful part of it was the filtering, which I could easily accomplish with a much cheaper pedal.

MXR Zakk Wylde OD : Another POS not worth buying. It's loud and hissy. Sounds thin. But then again, I haven't been too impressed with MXR pedals so far anyway. The MXR 6-band eq I had was hissy too. I had a much better sound out of my old Arion eq. The ZW OD smells of a cheap pedal with a marketing ploy.

Yamaha Magic Stomp: Good luck.. The switches on these suck beyond belief. I wouldn't recommend "stomping" on one. I didn't find any of the distortions very usable, it has odd unusable effects like "helicopter", and "Tractor".. There's a slight delay time between effects.. Just another waste of cash.

Boss HM2- Just an awful distortion sound all the way around..

Sorry to go off topic. My cheapest pedal would probably be my Arion Tuner. Bought in the late 80's and still working very well. I think I paid $20 or something like that.

My cheapest pedal also has a pretty cool story.

I found a used MXR Distortion + at guitar center for, like, 30 bucks and the guy and the counter said this really REALLY angry chick came in the day before and sold all her boyfriends gear!!! Apparently that had been living together a while and the Kat just up and left. No note...no reason...nothing.

She just said "F it" and sold all his stuff.

So I got the dude's Distortion pedal and my friend got his Blue Box.

We just keep them for that story.

I'm surprised that the eh tube eq sucked... granted, $150 for an eq? still I own an english muff'n and that pedal absolutely kills thru my tube amp.

I have the zack wyld od too... yes, a bit noisy... but I thought it was pretty transparent as a drive so... it does that well, anyway. Doesn't get a lot of use on my board... but when u r looking for a very slight amount of drive... it seems to fair well for me.

hm-2... I bought mine for $15... and even that was too much. I don't know why these get good reviews from the 'over drive elite'. I really don't see much redeeming about mine... doesn't do metal well, doesn't do od well.

My (green) Electro-Harmonix (Russian) Big Muff. It was cheaper than the "original". It's better for bass (more low end).

The cheapest pedal I use is a Maestro (Gibson) chorus pedal. I paid like $35 bucks for it brand new at a local grocery store chain (Meijer). It even came with a power supply and a short cord. It's a little noisy, but it's a solid pedal and works great even if it isn't the most lush sounding chorus effect I have.

Loving the cheap pedal experiences..!

I stumbled across a cheap Chinese Tubescreamer clone made by Biyang called a 'Tone Fancier' OD8...thought to myself I couldn't go wrong, it even has changeable chips and comes with three to choose from (though I must confess the difference is VERRRRRY subtle)...all for about £40. Awesome! It has been on my board ever since and being a monster PEARL JAM fan it is great for that type of sound. A done deal.

A hot second is the Boss Super Overdrive, in fact I even bought a second one and run one into the next; that kicks butt!!

Had a Boss metalzone given to Ray to use. He gave it to me.
I gave it back to him.

I have to laugh, you know the boss SD-1, right?

Sucks by itself on a regular amp.

Take this pedal and combine with a Marshall distorted channel and it's very pleasing to the ear.

But not on any other amp thus far..

my tuner is actually. MY +/-1% tuner! (its breaking)
I gotta find out how to solder soon or it might be too late for it.
Dean Markely tuner, its got some bad reviews, but its +/-1%, its so golden!
