A friend of mine has an older Roland guitar synth unit. You have to mount an extra pickup on the guitar (or buy a Roland-ready one). It worked really well for keys and horn sounds.

He had to learn to alter his playing style though. When on a piano setting, he would play different chord formations and positions to make it sound more acurate.

midi doesn't make sound... midi is digital info that records the 'performance'... the sound comes from the instrument it interfaces with...

I know the exact roland unit dude is talking about.... is a very nice unit and collectible these days... probably cost you $400 if you can find one. does have the standard 'slight delay' that you get when converting audio to a midi note...

I'd suggest a synth pedal... they typically make them for bass but they sound very similar to an analog keyboard or the roland synth mentioned above. the synth pedal doesn't have the delay I mentioned...you'd prob spend $50 to get one

other than that... the roland v8 is about $800 and it sounds like keys and has one of the best response time in terms of that annoying delay...

I've owned quite a few guitar-synth contraptions and the v8 is about the best I've seen.

cheers.

Second fiddle,
Don't mean any disrespect, and I ain't one to stifle anyone's creative aspirations, but, one of the most creative and bitchin' guitar players that I have had the pleasure to rock with played his Les Paul Custom directly into a 100 W Marshall . No additional tone enhancement necessary!

Just a thought,
Howlin'

Go to my player and listen to the Funk

The ambient sounds you hear are an Electro Harmonix Bass Synth pedal. EH makes some cool pedals that get that analog sound all day long. They dont sound digital. I dont use these live cause I dont want to mess them up with someone stepping on them or pouring beer in them. Moog makes some nice envelop filters that get that old fat 70s synth sounds.

Go to the Electro Harmonix site and listen to their sound samples and see if something you like is on there. They have a neat collection of devices that folks like Bootsy used on bass. A lot of these bass devices sound great on guitar. Let your ear guide you.

Good Luck

we don't need no stinking synthes
use a harmonizer, turn off the direct sound, turn up the repeats and modulate, fourth, fifth or octave. Octave is the least trickey to play in key of course. you will get sound like bells, strings. now add a volume pedal before the harmonizer and delay after the harmonizer. mess with it...... AAAAAAHHHHHH.

COOL

That harmonizer thing sounds cool. I have the vg99 roland. It will be your best processor / midi combo. Midi tracking is always a pain cause no one has worked it out to perfection yet. However this unit has loads of processing AND gives you the some of best midi interfaceing you can get, without doing some welding in the garage. Most guitar midi to date really requires more than one unit and cable splitting to get the tracking bugs to go away.

When I'm using 6-Strings, I run either the Strat or AR-250 into an RP2000 set on Suboctaver....think the intro to Deep Purples "Perfect Strangers" for the sound!

There is a dizzying array of guitar effects processors available these days and finding the right combination of guitar effects pedals and rackmount gear can be a daunting task that requires a certain amount of experimentation before finding the combination that works best for you.
