I'm shopping around all the options, with an idea towards frugality, of course.

The Radial PZ-Deluxe looks like a beauty with a built-in boost.

The Zoom A3 has some built-in FX, but its small footprint makes hitting the boost button more difficult - a guy had htis last night at the open mic.

The Behringer ADI21 is a bottom of the barrel preamp, only has the EQ abilities - but it;s only $30, too.

There are a few other options out there, all in the over-$200 price range.

I thought I'd weigh in on this but damn...these tumbleweeds blowing thru have me concerned.

mike, I've had good luck w my L.R. Baggs PARA acoustic DI. works great for both my mandos and my old (Harmony made) Alden archtop. They all have dual piezos mounted to the underside of the soundboard.

I'm also a fan of the SansAmp Bass Driver DI made by Tech 21. yeah, it's primary "intended" use IS for bass but it's quite effective for all acoustic/elec instruments too. it's "blend" feature is quite useful.

+1 on the Baggs Para DI

I don't own one but play through them often. Not a lot of bells & whistles but a really usable eq and good sound. If I needed to buy one this would be it.

Yeah, I've heard good things about the Baggs Para, but also that it isn't great with the Taylor ES system.

The Tech 21 Sans Amp Para is the latest (non bass) version, and looks pretty good as well, $10 more than the Radial.

Neither of them have the boost feature though. If I ever get to the point where I find an acoustic partner, that feature will be real good when I have to do a lead.

I ordered the Radial PZ Pre last week. Chicago Music Exchange had a 15% off all pedals sale, so it cost me $255.
Besides the boost feature, it's also got a mute and 2 inputs which can be used one-or-the-other or both blended at same time. Both of these features will be very handy at the open mic I'm hosting - no more bringing the channel fader and monitor fader down every switch-out.
The built-in EQ with tunable mid frequency will also help in taming the piezo 'quack' that a lot of people have with their guitars. Last time I really noticed how different the tones were from some people's instruments. I could only tweak so much at the mixer.

Same is actually done throughout numerous old tube type PA systems. Sounds good, at the very least in MY PERSONAL crappy laptop speakers...
