I have worked with the Seymour Duncan SA3SC Woody SC Acoustic Guitar Pickup and several others and it just seems that thay all work best when ran through a amp and then to the mixing board. I like the Seymour Duncan SA3SC the best only because it looks good on a guitar.

I have a LR Baggs M1 active pickup. Very good top end and pretty natural tone if used with careful EQ. The Rare Earth is warmer sounding and not as articulate as the M1. See youtube for some demo clips. Here is one:
