Thanks all, I've found it! Bought an old 1979 JMP MkII 50w combo for a bargain price a few weeks ago and I LOVE it. Cranked it at a mate's house and it sounds sweeeeeet. The hi sensitivity just roars, but it a classic way even with my Telecasters and the lo input sounds verrrry old skool Bluesbreaker when maxed out.

Anybody else heard/tried one of these? I reckon, like many, that these are the must-have classic amps of tomorrow!

Marshall 2266c seems to be one of the better combo amps out there. The blues breaker sounds good too. Never played thru one tho. As far as the " don't buy a Marshall amp!" people? It's like Ford, Chevy, Mopar,etc...You have your preference and you go with it. I like Marshall and a Les Paul. But, I also have a Strat and a Twin Reverb and a Peavey, and a Sunn and a Checkmate. I don't like Fender at all....but that's all I have played for the last 6 months. I look at the Marshall and play thru the Fender. Doesn't make sense. Marshall 2266c.

Great choice! It already is one of the classic must have amps.

I agree with that guy that said the 2266C Vintage Modern combo is a pretty good amp, although I'm more of a Mesa fan myself. Marshall's MG-250 is also not bad for some things. I guess overall though any more I feel Marshall is all about the brand name rather than the quality, which is kind of sad for such an iconic guitar amp.

Most NEW Marshalls aren't as good as the old ones (poor designs, ask your local amp techs.) The transformers aren't the same, neither are the speakers. There are good clones out there, so look for something like a Hoffman, or some other boutique. IF you want it in a smaller package, find a real good model 1973 18watter (Kind of a bluesbreaker Jr.) Else find a Modded Fender Bassman head, etc.

Mesa was originally based off of Fender designs, and hot rodded. Now days in the super hi gains (not what the OP was looking for) There's Splawn, Soldano, Mesa, and others.

Let the sound be your guide, as the badge can add $$$ where there's no other tangible difference.

I'm glad the OP found what he was looking for though.

I'm in total agreement with this statement. I've owned 2 Marshalls. A JVM410H half-stack and a JCM2000 half-stack. The JVM was absolute garbage all the way around and was really expensive, and the JCM was so limited that it could only do one thing right which was distortion, but it still wasn't good.

My advice would to look at the Peavey's. There's an amp for everyone in their line-up and they've come a long way since the 80's. I now play through a Peavey 6505+ half-stack and not only is it a powerful monster...it's also a tone monster.

In your case, you're looking for more of a classic sound, so I'd check out the Valveking or the 3120...although the 6505+ can do it all whether you're playing death metal all the way to country. Just a thought...

Those were AWESOME amps!!! I'd love to have one of those in like new condition. You want brutal for the 80's/early 90's? That was the king... :D

Nothing is gonna beat Splawn. Its like all those glorious marshall tones from the 70's to now in one amp. Seriously.

Plus its made here in the US.

Yeah, Splawn's have been given some praise. The owner of the company used to mod Marshall's.

I had a JCM 900 half stack...sold the head and kept the cab. If I ever decide to get a Marshall head, I'll get a JCM 800. But I could get a Framus Cobra for the same price, and it's a better amp.

1987x head, it is the reissue of the 1987 50w original 50w plexi my origional setup was a 100w stack 1959 head w/ a 1960 A and B cabinets that I bought new in 1970 and a 1987 50w head which was alot sweeter than the 100w head and plenty of power. I have a 3203 artist head now w/ a 2x 12 cabinet loaded w g-12 celestrions its 35w but it sounds really good. The x is going to run abot $1500 the 3203 you can find for a couple hundred but make sure both transformers are in good shape because they are no longer available. But the master volume is a big +
