Oh no...another bunch of questions .....

Got an old Ampeg 810 Cabinet I was wanting to fix up, The Toltex on my cabinet is pretty ripped, The replacement Toltex at 34.95 a yard seems a bit expensive, and it will probably get ripped up the first time I take it to a gig anyways. Anyone tried the spray on Truckbed liner on a speaker cabinet?

How does it hold up on wood and being knocked around at gigs?

Did you do it yourself with the DupliColor Truck Bed Liner in a can...how many cans would it take to do a 810 cabinet?

Did you take it to a place to get sprayed professionally? What's the cost comarison vs doing it yourself with the spray on cans...is the quality better?

Thanks

I dunno, Whitesel, but I think it's a kick-ass idea. Lemme know if it works out. Somebody's gotta try this!

Hell yea, thats a GREAT idea!
I'd get the demensions in total square inches and call a pro for an estimate. There is a guy here out of Tyler, in his adds he says he'll spray anything anywhere, in any color.
I have been kicking around an idea of making faux cabs to stack on either side of the drummer, just for the old classic rock band apperence.
This could be a exellent way of acheiving that look.

you might have a marketable idea for some people.
Ill stick with my amp carpet though, I do my pedalboards with it afterall.

Amp Carpet ?

Yeah, I was considering that "amp Carpet", not sure of the name of it, have a set of Yamaha PA speakers with that stuff on it, only problem with that stuff is , My Cats love that material more than a scratching post, a Cat can Wreck that stuff in a day plus it seems to pick up fuzz and hair a lot...my cats would see my Ampeg 810 Cabinet as a really awesome Cat Tree if I put that stuff on it. :)

There is a place that sprays truckbeds nearby, I'll give them a call. I'm guessing I should pull off the existing Toltex...maybe put some sort of base spray paint or lacquer on the wood before it gets sprayed with the truckliner, They say to "Scuff Surface with 3M Scotch Brite Pad" so I'm gussing it should have some sort of base paint coating I can "scruff up"

I'll give them a call Monday when they are open and report back what I find out.

Just wanted to know if anyone had tried this before and had any suggestions on preparing the surface.

I figure if it does get wrecked up a little at gigs, I can always use a can of the stuff to touch up the spots that get wrecked.

Doing it with the cans myself, I figure it will use no more than 5 cans since they say 5 cans can do most 6 ft. Truck beds That's Under $50, much cheaper than replacing the Toltex.

yeah amp carpet, you act like youve never been in a music store before hahaha.
its that black carpet they put on amps and cabs to make them scratch proof. IMO this is much better then the leather alternetive becuase ripped leather looks so 1950s. but amp carpet has yet to go out of style 8)

That sounds like a pretty good idea Whitesel. I just might go and buy a can of it and spray it on an old board to see how it holds up. Definitely less expensive than Tolex and like you said, a spare can could always be used for touch-up if needed. Thanks for sharing man.

Ah yes, that black fuzzy stuff that picks up every piece of lint and trash in the place. LOL, I keep a lint roller handy for my Yamaha monitors and pedal board. (though I no longer use a pedal board)

I would think that a rough sanded surface would be what you wanted to apply too. Directly to the wood. If the canned stuff is not all that expensive I'd get me a 3x3 foot square of ply, spray it, allow it to cure, and sit it outside the front door and walk on it for a week.
If that dont test the theory nothing will.

Yeah....you are right...maybe I'll test it on piece of wood first and beat on it a bit to see if it holds up ok before attempting it on my big 810 cabinet.

Use a primer paint on one side and just sprayed directly onto wood on the other and see what works best.

Will let you know!

Thanks Again

I used to work at a cabinet shop and this other cabinetmaker had the bottom 8" of his truck panels sprayed with that stuff... looked pretty durable to me.

I wonder if it'll work on wood, which swells & shrinks with humidity. Will it just flake off, I wonder.

I'd like to have it on some of my old guitar cases, for that matter, if it works...

Metal / steel truck beds can reach 120F in summer plus some. It should not be affected by expansion / shrinkage that much.

An excellent control idea on his experiment, cant wait to hear his results.

Until you power it up, turn the volume to 10 and hit a note. They would sleep with one eye open from then on.
