mike, the "hair" that is used to string a bow is only a very small determining factor in overall cost.

200-400 is actually on the cheaper side of what bows can run. serious orchestra players usually have bows costing thousands of dollars! pernambuco is a commonly used wood in more expensive bows.....i guess it's fairly rare and/or hard to work with.

most traditionalists bristle at bows made of graphite but they can be good alternatives and of course they're super strong and aren't susceptible to temp/humidity changes. i've seen them run anywhere from $150 -1500.

a bass student of mine recently picked up a $300 graphite bow that he loves .....i'm hoping he'll bring it by for me to check out come next lesson.
