Nothing like gear built for "the love of it".

I think there is a lot of great mass mfg gear out there, but many of the time-honored greats were originally built in a garage.
The pro co "bud box era" rat for instance... I've read that the original builder miss-read a 47ohm as a 47k and that resulted in a pedal that became a legend.
The original mesa boogie started out as a guy modifying fender amps, in walks carlos santana and says "man that thing can boogie" and the rest is history.
