cap scott... r u talkin' bout picup hum? you get hum from a sngl coil by itself... that's why the 2 and 4positions on a strat 5way are less noisy...

you can easily fix the 1, 3 and 5 positions by putting in a dummy coil.

if you've got unnatural hum from a gtr, and other gtrs don't make the sm hum on the sm rig then you can look at a few other things...
shielding is great, but if you've got a cold solder joint on your ground it isn't going to help. when you touch your strings do you notice a drop in hum? if not you've got a grounding issue. perhaps the grnd wire to your trem or to the output jack has been broken.

hope this helps

Who the heck knows, surely not me.

I get excessive feedback, but I dig it.

Like I said, they want me to copper shield the cavity.
I think it's just wasted cash, as I don't use a wireless and I like what I am getting now.

If was to think that all that tasty feedback would be going bye-bye because I gave in and shielded the cavity, I'd just forget it altogether.

I guess what I am trying to ask is "did you notice a big difference when you copper shielded your guitar(s)?"

I rarely get the 60 cycle hum from the single coil and when i do, 9 times out of 10 it's from a bad ground something is plugged into. I just change it around or out if I can.

I did find that one time my fav guitar was just not having it that night, so I went to the back up and all was well.

So far, nothing I play is copper shielded.

most gtrs are shielded via paint from the factory... some cheaper gtrs aren't... I wouldn't use tape... you can buy the paint and it works much better and in answer to your question... shielding will DESTROY microphonic feedback...

WHAT?

That sacred me..LOL

I am playing a 50's mij fender strat and my backup is a 60's mij fender strat.

Paint?

hmm?

Whaa? lol

I figure it's like the cliche', "if it isn't broken, do not fix it".

was just saying that the copper tape is a pain to work with and if u r going to do it buy the shielding paint.

i have to ask at this pt... who is telling you to do this? I would only do it if you are getting a bunch of microphonic feedback...not regular feedback.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

That's exactly what I was thinking..

Oh you know, band members that don't even play guitar. ( head in hands )

I must be going soft upstairs to listen to that to begin with.

It would cost you a whole $9.00 to find out.

http://xrl.us/bfzh44

That would be enough to do a guitar.

I have known people in the past who really like the hum. Myself included. I think that those who realize they have it and get used to it, and know how to use it to their advantage have a way of really setting themselves apart from the norm.

Sometimes there's nothing better than playing a guitar that is balls to the wall like that. People who slack will be caught with their pants down. Use it to your advantage and it has an iconic feel. It can force you to be improvisational and step outside your own box.

I say keep it the way it is Scott. You want a quiet guitar, buy a new one. My '57 RI does the same s**t. I could have very easily took the PU's and put them in one of my other guitars. But then I'd lose the beauty of the '57.

Thanks Shredd, you are speaking my language.

I have a 60th annv mim strat and it's just like that.

No hum, nice enough guitar, but very little true heart in the way of unique sound.

(it rarely gets used as a result)

Cool post Shredd, nice axes too, though for the life of me I understood about half of what your saying.
