That's an easy one: The Stooges
Roxy Music, NY Dolls, T-Rex and David Bowie must also be mentioned. Of course these were so called glam bands but glam and punk cross-pollinated, particularly Iggy and Bowie. Can't forget The Ramones too.

Does that old band The Romantics fit in there somewhere?

Detroiter's The Romantics were post-punk and more on the pop side of things. Just remembered The Velvet Undeground.

Chillin',
All good stuff originated in the sixties!
Roky Ericson's "Thirteenth Floor Elevators" style of raw 60's psychedelic rock might be classed as PRE -proto-punk!
Check out this link and see if you agree.

Good point. Iggy's first band The Iguanas were from the mid-sixties. The Seeds were definitely a 60's protopunk band.

The beginning;
1. The Stooges
2. Blue Cheer
The heyday;
1. The Ramones
2. Sex Pistols
The revival (bubblegum punk);
Take your pick, most sound the same regardless.
