Bad cover:
Mariah Carey "Bringin' on the Heartache"
I think there should be a law against Pop artists covering hard rock songs.

OMG! Yeah! Like Celine Dion doing "You Shook Me All Night Long!"
I'm STILL trying not to vomit...

"Simple Man" by Deftones (Lynard Skynard)
"Holy Diver" by Killswitch Engage (Dio)
Worst ones I may have heard:
"Crazy Train" by Bullet for my Valentine (Ozzy Osbourne)
"You give love a bad name" by Atreyu (Bon Jovi)
"Eyeless" by Bring me the Horizon (Slipknot)
"My Own Summer (Shove it)" by Fightstar (Deftones)

Best covers IMO:
Hey Joe-Roy Buchanan (you guitar players better wear a diaper the first time you listen to it)
I Heard It Through The Grapevine-Creedence Clearwater Revival
Lowdown In Lodi-Freddie King
I Got My Mojo Working-fisherman bob & The Bluefin Tuna Band (I'm sort of proud of it. I've been playing it for 27 years. It's on my Bandmix profile page.)
Worst covers IMO:
Come Together-Aerosmith (It's almost exactly like The Beatles version. Why bother recording an exact reproduction)
The Final Countdown- Sentient Paradox put a thread on Bandmix of this ridiculous Youtube video of some idiot who looked like he had to pee really bad while singing the song

good covers:
Joe Cocker's version of The Beatles' "Little Help From My Friends"
Faith No More's cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"
bad covers:
Metallica's sacreligious butchering of Blue Oyster Cult's classic "Astronomy".
Hate to say it, but the great Otis Reading did a putrid version of The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction".

The Pretenders did a good version of The Kinks' "Something Better Beginning"
Three Dog Night did a good job on the classic 30's pop song "Try A Little Tenderness" based on the Otis Reading version. ( I was in a band that covered it in 1969, pulled it off pretty good too, although it was some of the most challenging organ playin' that I had played up to that time. Good thing that our other keyboard player in that band was a better singer then me, cause I probably couldn't have done both playin' and singin' on that tune.)
Love did an awsome cover of Ann Margret's "Little Red Book"
Sorry, can't think of any more BAD covers at the moment. (guess I try to forget them)
later

More good covers I have heard:
"Good Times Bad Times" by Godsmack (Led Zepplin)
"Band on the Run" by Foo Fighters (Wings w/ Paul McCartney)
"Epic" by Atreyu (Faith No More)
"Wish" by Linkin Park (Nine Inch Nails)
Haven't heard anymore bad covers recently.

Oh man! 3 Dog Night covered everything well!
"Mama Told Me Not To Come" - Randy Newman
"Never Been To Spain" - Hoyt Axton
"Liar" - I forget who did that one 1st
"One" - showtune
Arlo Guthrie's cover of Steve Goodman's "City Of New Orleans" was great, too.
Phil Collins should stay well away from Motown & Van Morrison, though!

The Pretenders closely covered The Kinks' Stop Your Sobbing. In fact Chrissey Hinde lived with Ray Davies so it's likely they got into each other's music. The Jam's cover of David Watts is also really chapter and verse (as it were).
My own faves include The Human League's amazing version of You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling. Considering they recorded it early in their career - it's on their debut album - it's very ambitious and totally different to the original but Oakey's voice and the overall mood is just stunning. Likewise Soft Cell's cracking versions of Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?. They gave two sixties soul classics a new twist and, in the case of TL, their version became better known than the original!
Bad covers? Just too many to list here....
