Wow! Rush was my favorite band from when I first got into rock (about 13 - 18 years old).
I saw them six times, including my first concert, ever (2-1-88). I saw them twice on the Snakes & Arrows Tour, in '07-'08. I don't really like the Time Machine stuff, but they are back in form.
I keep seeing Nirvana on this list, which is funny because they were a four piece for most of their existence.
In that vein, I nominate Failure. They spent most of their prime as a 3 piece, then added a second guitarist.
Also Agent Orange, one of the 10 best punk bands, ever.
Primus- what can you say about them? Nothing, really. They're a 3 piece, they're weird.
Cream is one of the best bands ever, much less in the 60's.
