Neil Peart!
overall he's just the best drummer I can think off.
But I'm not a drummer so what do I know?
cheers!

I agree with you as far as a drummer who is still alive however, Buddy Rich to this day has not been surpassed.

Terry Bozio or Stewart Copeland or Dan Wojciechowski are my faves.

Steven Tant . . . because he has stood ( or sat ) behind ( or beside ) me for over six years with never a complaint and always an encouragement.

When it comes to rock and roll, NOBODY could jam like Deep Purple. They simply rocked their guts out onstage. I saw two of the "lesser" versions with Coverdale, Hughes, and Bolin and it was still out of this world great. Ian Pace is worthy of mention with the greatest drummers of all time.
The original line up with Ian Lord and Blackmore would so melt your face.

Blackmore is the REAL father of neo-classical lead guitar playing
One of my fav gutiar players of all time!
Without Ritchie, there would be no Yngwie. Too bad Yngwie didn't have a real band like Ritchie did with Pace, Lord and the rest
cheers!

Really??!! No nods for Keith Moon? The original rule breaker for rock drummers. He gave drummers "permission" to go outside the hihat and snRe drum 4/4, 2/4 etc time signatures. Also BJ Wilson of Procol Harum. Tons of fills, etc. once described as looking like an octopuss playing his kit.

Moon wa sa 'lead drummer', he played the drums like a frontline instrument, not a rhythm player.
Alan White with yes and Carl Palmer both shwed great rhythm ability and lead drummer capability with massive drum kits at their disposal.
