I have no clue, honestly. But A couple I can think of are.....hmmm.....strike that; reverse it- were: Switchfoot pre-2005 and Poets of the Fall before they went downhill. I think their lack of limelight is pretty well justified now with the stuff they've been putting out lately, but man! They had some fantastic songs before that. Meant to Live? Carnival of Rust? Classics.

Rainbow would be my choice (pre-1979), which is fitting since Ritchie Blackmore is the most underrated rock guitarist of all time.

Why do you think Ritchie is under rated? He's amazing and pretty much started the neo classical rock guitar movement and most real guitar players know it.
cheers!

Answer: Spinal Tap!
They set the standard, imo, for what being in a rock band means.
I got "New Way to be Human" by Switchfoot in 1998 after seeing them in a Gospel Music Association showcase in Gnashvile. Another really great band I saw there the following year was Fono. Always expected them to be a breakout band, bigger than Switchfoot.
