If I have to choose one it would be Rush hands down. Neil Peart changed the face of the drumming world and continues to do it today. Songs like Natural Science, the 2112 epic, and Freeze (from Vapor Trails) are some of my favs.

I like to look at it like this: If you had the choice to go see any ONE band in concert, backstage, for free, everytime they came to town, which band would it be? Take into consideration your liking of the band, naturally, their longevity (will they even realistically release another album?), what their music does for you both on record and in a live setting, etc.

As many bands and genres of music as I'm incredibly influenced by, when it comes to leveraging the formula above, that band for me is Rush. Hands down. I've seen them 3 times now and everytime, they are just incredible. 3 guys and all of that incredible music... I've been into them for years and years. The only thing that'll stop them from writing music will be tragedy or age and with all of the tragedy Peart has endured only to still come back and write music, I think any variable of the latter of the two will ultimately be what keeps this band from doing what they love and are so incredible at.

I usually don't like taking a stand on "most influential" because I'm influenced by music as a whole but... yeah, I can safely say Rush.

Jonathan Richman. Completely turned my head around about what a song/record/performance is.

Plus the Modern Lovers album shreds.
