FOA, this list deserves another post as it must have required some effort. If it is an ordered list I would dissagree in many of the top 25 places, but see a lot of good guys listed there especially with eric clapton. Hes a good player not great. He's a great songwriter. His guitar playing is not bad, but I cannot believe you would put him above so many others who would beat him based on technique, voice, phrasing, knowlege of theory demonstrated in the chord changes and melody compliments. I guess it all depends what you rate them on. If were talking physical tecnique, I think steve vai, chet atkins, yngwie malmsteen, albert lee, al dimeola... if your talking best in a band with lyrics then evh, srv, jimi hendrix, jimi page... if your talking feel and emotion then carlos santana, srv, steve vai, satriani, john scofield.

Thanks again for a great list.

Which means there is no best and no list - music is in the air, when it reaches you and tickles your little hairs in a way that they rub and make magic, that moment is the best. It is gone as soon as it appears.

now go practice.

Alright, for the record, this list was taken out from the Rolling Stone Magazine Website, and I have to agree that some of the ranks are wrong. In the end its only an opinion of different people. Like the comment above says, music IS in the air, its just a matter of taste. The only thing I cant dispute is Esteban Herrera being numero uno!

I have much respect for the list... but see it for what it is... or who it's readers are... rollingstone is read by music appreciators... and not necc musicians... guitar world is read by gtr players only... both have their limited stance.
estabon first tho? what the? don't get me wrong the guy is great... but so was yngwie and neither would top my list. both brought little "new" to the style they mirrored(yngwie-classical/estabon-flamenco). I would put a number of people in that spot - van halen, vai, satriani, chet atkins, hendrix, Jimi Page - but not estabon (IMO). I try to think... who changed the face of how we play guitar the most. That is the "most influential player". That is a player who brought something "no one has ever done" to the table.
Page brought so many different feels to the rock gtr stage... he really broadened the horizon... Page did the first finger tap.
VanHalen took tapping to the next level.
Hendrix had a unique style due to the left hand technique on a right hand guitar, had a great ear for some equally stange note choices too.
Vai played with more passion than any other on "passion and warfare"... His modal choices were new and exiting.
Satriani took gtr instrumental and put it in a place where EVERYONE could listen to it... with that "crush of love" - I still remember when that came on the radio... and being blown away by the phrasing.
chet atkins had golden hands... could play ANYTHING effortlessly... raised the bar in many different styles -country, jazz, blues, rockabilly - and that fretless gtr thing - WHEW!

So who changed the face of guitar the most for you?

No he didn't. Lots of people were trying to finger tap in the 60's and even more in the 70s. The only thing that matters is that it was Eddie that brought it to the attention of the masses. Jimmy isnt even in the top thousand guitarists on this planet.

Hendrix had a unique style due to the left hand technique on a right hand guitar, had a great ear for some equally stange note choices too.

Thats because his childhood was steeped in Jazz and Blues

Vai played with more passion than any other on "passion and warfare"... His modal choices were new and exiting.

About as passionate as a robot. Technically gifted but both feel and emotion have escaped him unfortunately

Satriani took gtr instrumental and put it in a place where EVERYONE could listen to it... with that "crush of love" - I still remember when that came on the radio... and being blown away by the phrasing.

Boooooooooooooooring.....Crap tunes, another machine churning out technical garbage.

So who changed the face of guitar the most for you?

Anyone and everyone! Even Dave Evans from U2 is technically poor but invented a style and sound all of his own.

*And now, for something completely different!*

Meh. These "greatest *" lists are a total waste of time and complete crap. These lists are only as good as an individual's personal opinion. Period. "Greatest Guitarists," "Greatest Drummers," etc. "Great" differs with every person, so for even a group of people to agree on one list like this is really... frivolous. I think what it all boils down to is, even happier than the people who agree with these lists are the people who disagree.

The aforementioned list looks more like a "name as many good guitarists as you can" list, lol. How in the world can you even compare these guitarists by a rank when there are so many different eras and genres??? I mean, yeah, Hendrix was great for his time and his contributions are timeless but as with many other things, people come along who COMPLETELY best the master and take what they've done to the next level. I mean, what happened to these guys:

Scott Mishoe (Solo)
Scott Stine (Solo)
Derek Taylor (Solo)
Ron Thal "Bumblefoot" (Solo, G'n'R)
Mattias "IA" Eklundh (Freak Kitchen, Freak Guitar, Miscellaneous projects)
Fabrizio Leo (Citriniti, Solo)
Frank Gambale (Chick Corea Band, Solo, Miscellaneous projects)
Magnus Olsson (Solo)
Kiko Loureiro (Angra, Solo)
Marshall Harrison (Black Sheep, Solo)
Brett Garsed (Solo)
TJ Helmrich (Solo)
Anthony Mazzella (Solo)
Stanley Jordan (Solo)
Dominic Cifarelli (Pulse Ultra, The Chronicles of Israfel, Misc. projects)
Fredrick Thordendal (Meshuggah, Sol Niger)
Ramón Ortíz (Puya, Ankla)

I mean, if I sat here long enough, I could probably create a list equally as lengthy as the one Rolling Stone did and with absolutely no doubles! I mean, as I'm sitting here writing this sentence, I'm thinking up tons of other guitarists who aren't on that list... some, surprisingly but others, not so. There are SO MANY GREAT GUITARISTS out there... actually, scratch that. There are SO MANY AMAZING MUSICIANS out there that to try to classify them in any type of order is both baffling and fruitless to me... but, hey... that's just me.

There is no "greatest." There is only proficiency and genius and from that, we derive favorites. No logical or rational order can be put on greatness other than chronologically. There's *always* someone greater than the next... but in no particular order, of course. =)

Okay, I'm done ranting. =P

It's crystal-clear that you haven't listened to a whole heck of a lot of Steve Vai's work. I used to share your opinion until I broadened my understanding of guitar and gave his full discography a chance. Yes, he has a pleathora of purely technical pieces but more often than not, his treasure troves of feel come out in places beyond the first couple of minutes of his songs. Someone like you probably would have no idea of those moments. I'm not trying to convince you otherwise to your opinion but don't speak solely on ignorance and the fact that you don't like his music for whatever reason based on a handful of songs you may have half-way listened to. Fairweather musicians litter this planet, I'll tell you what. Of course, if you're a guy who finds feel in blues or jazz, of course you're not going to perceive Steve Vai's context of feel. Just because you don't compute it the same doesn't mean it doesn't exist, though... granted, I will hand it to you that when Steve Vai attempts anything remotely close to blues, he fails miserably, lol.

Instead of being a jackass and arguing just for the sake of arguing, I'll give you a couple of songs to specifically listen to of his. If you'll listen to them without any preconceived notions that they're going to suck, I think you may vary your opinion slightly. Maybe not but don't cheat yourself out of good music because of stubborn opinion. Too many guys get caught up in their ridiculous stubborn opinions and miss out on a lot of good music because of it. I've been guilty of the same thing and still catch myself sometimes, so I'm not pointing any fingers.

Boston Rain Melody
Blue Powder
The Riddle
Building the Church (Technical intro but great feel through the verses)
Melissa's Garden

About your opinion of Satriani, I have come to the same conclusion of his work past Engines of Creation. There's usually a song or two (maybe even three) on his albums that I find appealing. Otherwise, it sounds to me like he recycles the same formulas he's used for success since day one.

U2's guitarist is great, by the way. Greatness isn't determined by technical proficiency. I don't know why so many people get so hung up on "well, this guy sounds great and is unique but he's not technical." Who cares if he's not technical!? This is all coming from a shredhead, by the way, so I know about technique and how many people seem to think it's the end all, be all of guitar.

Meh...
