On a recent trip to Poland I attended the concert of one of Polands' biggest stars and got a copy of his new CD, which I don't think has actually come out yet. He's on Warner/EMI and this new one "Signs" is completely english except for one song in Polish.

This is a freakin' GREAT album! Musically it's a soulful jazzy-classical-rock thing, but lyrically it is the most amazing thing I've heard since U2's Joshua Tree.

Here is the title song with a video:

"Signs"
Miatek Szczesniak / Wendy Waldman © 2012

In the night I'm not dreaming
Close my eyes, I'm still seeing
Every day He's given us life,
Every day He's given us death,
People on the streets are just laughing
I saw California in ash, fire all around
Don't know where it's going

Praying for the times,
I can see the signs
Something's coming

Every day He's given us light,
Every day He's given us dark,
People on the street go on laughing
I don't want to see it again
Water all around
Don't know where it's going

Praying for the times,
I can see the signs
Something's coming

Praying for the times,
I can see the signs
Never close my eyes
Something's coming

Even when I close my eyes
Even when I try to deny
Things I never wanted to know...
I know

From a lyrical stand point I don't see anything profound about it... (But that's just me... ) In fact, I categorize this as yet one more addition to the great collection of "End of the World Songs" . (I still like Cheech Marin's version the best.)/ Further more, its orientated as a fearful reckoning. Id be shocked to see one that treats the end of the world as a good thing (where better days would ensue thereafter)

Sorry Yod, I just cant get excited over this one...

That's because you're so used to America, where we have so many media choices that someone can be a major star in one genre and no one hears about them in another genre at all.

Miatek is a major secular pop-star in Poland. This is being played on radio right next to Madonna or Lady Gaga. He risks losing his label deal and the ire of secular society but it doesn't deter his message. What he says is profound not because of many words, but because of the (secular) audience he speaks to.

This was the only video in english that I could post from his latest CD. The context of the entire album is a very bold statement, but I can't post the whole album.

Here is one more

"Build That Boat"
kenny edwards/wendy waldman/miatek szczesniak

God said you'd better get out of this town, it's all over
Now I'm going to tear it down, I'm gonna break it down
I'm going to start it all again because the world will drown in the rain
make this float,
go on sail away
into a brand new day of hope

you've got to build that boat,
you've got to build that boat,

Last night I heard something, it was across the sea
I came to tell you that you're going with me
one woman, one man
that's how it's meant to be
That's in His plan
don't know why, why it's me and you
whatever we go through I know

we've got to build that boat,
we've got to build that boat,

Well I suppose its a start. If he's reaching a secular audience, then I guess that's a good thing. While I consider myself a secular audience (when it comes to music), in America, I have heard numerous genres attempt this ...(Remember the Doobies Brothers, for example...? And lets not forget the pseudo-gospel music of many other southern artists)

I guess maybe, the lyrical content in this case is old hat for me...which may be the reason they don't resonate as much for me today..

In Poland, I guess the music surrounding these ideas (re secular audiences) is probably still novel? (I'm just asking)

Um . . . it's OK I guess .

Perhaps I should come back an listen again.
When I don't have a pain between my ears.

Thanks for posting music. That's a bonus any way you slice it.

again....it's the context of the whole album that makes it for me. I saw him and thought it was "OK", but as I've been listening to the whole project I have become much more impressed with his work.

Most of his songs have a hopeful message to balance the two I just posted. "build that boat" is referring to Noah's Ark

Oh well...can't post the whole album.
