I would not be able to choose. Both versions have their merits.

Actually they're both covers of a traditional Irish song. I like Thin Lizzy but it's just a preference.

Thin Lizzy...Did'nt care for Metallica's version at all. Was the beginning of the end as far as I'm concerned...

Whiskey In the Jar by Thin Lizzy,or the cover by Metallica

E.Fox,
Neither one, as I much prefer the Tommy Makem & Roger McGuinn version from Mcguinn's "Treasures From The Folk Den " album. Its a classic song and You-Tube abounds with superior versions.

However, I have been listening to Metalica's version more often of late because I have it loaded on one of my cassette tapes that I listen to back at my work site. I love the tune and have become more tolerant of the Metallica version. Another song that Metallica covered OK , but not nearly as good as the original, is Blue Oyster Cult's " Astronomy" .

As for Thin Lizzy, I recall jammin' out on "Boys Are Back In Town" many times back in the day. THAT'S a great song to cover!

It's all a mater of opinion, of course.
