The two bands to have the most noticeable and immediate impact on how I viewed my own songwriting were The Beatles and ABBA. They showed me how some of the most elaborate and complex musical choices can be the most understated (not a side by side you probably see too often I realize).

That aside, I've listened to Nightwish and other symphonic metal my whole life and they've certainly left deep impressions on me.

For general playing probably John Petrucci or Jeff Loomis, for theoretical stuff and solo-ing ideas probably Yngwie, his pedal point work still has a massive influence in a lot of the solos I write
