lmao  I like their sound but find their lyrics repetitive & dull...everyone's like "*gasp* They're Canadian! We have to support our fellow Canucks in their music b/c it's so much harder here to get a leg up!" Well, that may be so, but does that mean we have to settle for mediocracy? Geez...like can't we give some constructive critiscism here & make them work harder? Sheesh...

yeah well, Rush, Yngwie, and Iron Maiden are still pumpin' out new albums. There are some good new bands out there but one new band that I really like is "Heaven and Hell". That's Dio, Iommi, Geezer, and Vinny Appice.

I think they rock hard or hard rock!!! LOL

New artists that are good: IMO - Evanescence (Amy Lee is an awesome vocalist) and I loved Creed (NOW DE-funct  "I'm a Sad Panda" )and Matchbox 20 for their 1990's/2000's songwriting and composing abilities.

Travis Barker is the Nu Neal Peart/John Bonham for the younger drummer sect I hear. But His trashy Punky "lightnin' fast" Style can't touch either of them technically imho.

I do enjoy listening to new rock music, although, I find that I just compare it to the old rock music, of the 70's & early 80's.

I really like Orange Goblin, have any of you heard of them? It's a bit stoner rock, but the whole groove of the band is supurb !

From the USA, Monster Magnet, man they rock, although I must admit, the lead guitar of both bands is not what I would call a straight out lead break, groups seem to have gone away from the ear shattering lead solo, and tend to stick with the main riff.

For me, I guess, the best solo I ever watched performed live, was Angus Young, playing Let There Be Rock on the Highway To Hell Tour...I can still see him now...man that was fantastic.!

im over 40 and try to listen to as much new music as i can tolerate. opions are like... well you know. so here's my reaking hole. my son turned me on to Coheed & Cambria...alot of cool stuff i thought(the vocals can be a little much at times) a friend turned me on to Symphony X and Russel Allen solo stuff (killer guitar tone) ive also grown to like alot of stuff Jack White is involved in(stripes & Racaunteurs) Govt Mule is also one of my favorites but Warren and the boys have been around a while i guess

I'm WAY over 50 ... I like Nickelback, Creed, Evanescence, Rush, Finger11, Gov't Mule, Robben Ford, John Lee Sanders new CD ... I agree that there's a lot of crap music out there, that's more noise than music IMO.

Last night I got to sit in for a set with Blues lap steel legend Sonny Rhodes and his band ... it was a great treat playing with some seasoned players again. Anthony, Sonny's bass player, and I got into some funky syncopated chops going between the two of us ... way to much fun.

Sonny's 65 and needs both hips replaced, but he's still touring, playing 250 to 300 dates a yr, said he hasn't got time to take the time off to get his hips done ... probably can't afford to take the time off as touring isn't cheap. And like everywhere else the live music scene here sucks and venues are far and few between

A sure sign that you're agin', dude, that whole "I remember when I had to walk 20 miles in snow to go to school" thing, there...LOL

It's a brave new world. I try to embrace the good, & yes it's hard not to compare the old & the new. There just seems to be less of the good that's readily available to me except by word of mouth, hence this thread. That gets frustrating, but watchagonnado?

Prevost, musta been fun to play with Sonny's Rhodes' band. Good for you! Wish it was me.

Unibasser, I'm glad you said Jack White, & not Jack Black...LOL

Bad Apple,

I never saw you on here before and listened to your songs. They sound really good, you and your group sound like mature musicians. You have really good control on your vocals. Your guitarist plays real tasteful licks and has great tone. I hope you find a drummer and good luck.

philbymon wrote:Are there any bands/solos that came out since 1990 that you like?

I hear ppl gripin' all the time about how music has turned to crap. It's rare to hear anyone over 40 talk about how they like this or that new musical act.

Ha ha ....I was about to assault the forum with my boorish anti-Nirvana spit & slobber on the topical thread but Ill kill two...ooops, Im a hippy , Ill FEED two birds with one stone, peace and luv etc....
To be quick and to the point, a lot of negative stuff the universe offered up circa 1990 was mixed up and spewn forth in the form of Nirvana and Grunge, the whole 'Seattle Sound'(??huh??) thing. Mediocre musicianship met with a growing apathetic listener population and this form of music still lives on today in many mutated forms...Emo, Death Metal etc. The Pro-Tool/Funeral Dirge through an effects board sound did replace the musicianship of the 60's, 70's and 80's. When I started playing in the 70's the mags only featured real players. Cars had AM radios and in a five mile trip you would hear Jimi, the Monkees, Smoky Robinson and maybe Tommy James and the Shondells. People were exposed to different influences through no choice of thier own. FM radio was no-playlist/freeform and was not the vapid, scripted, ad based commercial entity it is today. When we got our little tape player to try to figure our heros stuff out there was a "HOW THE EFFF Did HE Do THAT?!?!?" factor. Listening to Jimmy Page, Joe Perry or trying to figure out what key Keef Richards was playing in was a real challenge.....frustrating and inspirational. The albums coming out in the mainstream were Lou Reed Live and Rock and Roll Animal....You could get bootlegs of the awesome Mick Taylor era 'Stones at the LA Colosseum for instance.....
Robin Trower, Johnny Winter, Frank Marino were the FM fodder of the day.
To me, my uninformed , boorish opinion...MAINSTREAM ie; accessible music doesn't even come close to what it was. Back then, even if you wanted obscure, it was still accessible. The only band that ever mattered, The sEx PiSt0Ls were out, the New York Dolls (Johnny Thunders inspired more people to play than all 'heros' combined), the Ramones etc.....OK, Ill stop now..
I gotta switch to decaf....but yeah, there is good music today as there always will be, but you just have to dig to the bottom of the landfill to unearth it. No offense intended :D

Peace 'n stuff

Okay this is too long for me to read, but I caught a few names. Definitely Rob Thomas. He's all heart and soul.
A band called HURT is metal influenced by grunge. The lyrics are very powerful. And Shinedown as well.
there's tons but yea

I am in to Jill Scott. I am assuming all musical forms are included and I must agree. So much music that is useless these days. Twenty years from now are we going to be wanting to hear anything by Brittany Spears. Oh I doubt it! ...I am fifty one BTW,Here is Jill Scott:

I thought about this even more once I made my initial comment. I also like the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Jamiroqui and the Blues Travelers.
