I hate the term - 'Musician'

It almost sounds like 'Magician' in a way. You do stuff that sounds good, people listen and sometimes if you are fortunate enough those who listen will pay to listen, but it's not Magician.

Huh? Call me anything but late for dinner...

I'd rather be a musician than a sh*t salesman.

Actually, I'm very very proud to be a musician. Sorry you don't feel that way...

Check this out Chipster: As opposed to titling what we are/do with the broadness of "musician," why not title yourself by what instrument(s) you play, if you choose to give yourself such a title to begin with? I find this to have less of the "magician" effect, and people have been more inclined to take me seriously as a "bassist" or "bass player" rather than as a "musician." 8) Perhaps its less intimidating, or less of a jump from reality to know what you actually do or what you actually play. I'm not sure, but it seems to work that way for me, through the experiences that I've had.

I feel the same way Philby. Being a musician, whether you choose to title yourself as a "musician," "(instrument)ist," or nothing at all, does give a sense of pride because it isn't something that everyone can do, or at least do well. Here's a cheesy example of what I mean: I admire people who can fix things... :D I'm not handy at all (my wife laughs at me because she fixes stuff better than I do), and I kind of admire, or mystify, or whatever... people who are handy, because I want to be something more than what I am.

Personally, I don't mind being admired as a "musician," or "bassist," or whatever else. :) Maybe I took it too deep for what you meant Chip, and if so, just call me out on it. :)

I prefer to be introduced as "the musically and lyrically talented"...bla bla bla

That is...if I were to ever be formally introduced onto a stage...or coffee shop...or a freak'en campfire...

Generally I call myself an artist...and leave it at that. How other perceive me is up to them.

It's just a fusing of words. Magic and Man = Magician. Music and Man = Musician. I think it's probably the 'ician' that gets to you. Even though being an Electrician involves a lot of smarts and education, it doesn't have that ring that Artist or Engineer seems to have on the ears. Maybe it's that 'ician' seems to have an air of working within a field and 'ist', more than 'eer', has more of a creative or inventive nature to it.

He He I'm pretty sure whatever I just made up would'nt hold up to every word, but it sounded cool :) A physician might be a highly held cian-position, but it takes a scientist, a biologist, or a friggin' fist to give them something to do :)

Usually when I hear the word musician, I think of somebody who can play an instrument. I guess a vocalist could be considered a musician as well, because they're instrument is their voice. They are creating music. Somebody who doesn't sing or play an instrument, but can create music through software on a computer could be considered a musician. They're all manufacturing sound. All of these musicians might not be held in the same regard and respect, but they're all musicians. What is music to some is noise to others.

What do you think of when you hear the word musician? What would be the top 5 cool things to be called, or referred to as, in the music world?

Sorry folks. I meant from a personal point of view, i.e. me. My dad played anything that made a sound but I never really thought of him as a Musician, just as someone who played anything that made a sound. Musician just sounds so, well it doesn't say a lot really does it? A bit like the word professional to my thinking.

Both words of course in the right hands mean something but to a lowly minnow like myself? Nah.

A lot of times playing gigs I feel more like a court jester than anything!

I don't think of Steve Vai as a Musician. I think of him as an F-ing good guitarist. :D

Scusay da French Sorry
