Original Music

Through the years I have found it hard to find groups that only wanted to do original music. There are alot of people who want to do covers. Am I realy alone in the world in not wanting to do covers?

Nope!
I do strictly original material. I'm not in it just for the stage time, even though that is the best part of it. It's just so much harder to get any satisfaction with original material compared to cover audiences that it probably scares a lot of people away from doing strictly original's.
Myself I dont care if only 20% of the audience likes my song's, I just play for them and forget the rest.
Not the best way to make money in the business I guess but as I always say
"it is what it is"

What's up diablo! I do orignals and covers. I'm a session guy, so it kind of goes with the territory. I prefer to work on original material that a client brings to me though because it is more satisfying than playing a song that already has a part. It feels good to create a line that my client and the producer didn't hear and blows their minds with it! :)

when you were 11 I was the singer in a band that did 1 cover for every 4 originals. I've been in bands that played up to half covers. I prefer originals but I get off on covers too.

I'm assuming that means "you, the entire band." Coming to a concensus on material can be frustrating, at best. Doing originals only makes that slightly easier, as long as the material isn't too politically-oriented with ppl of diverse views, & there are agreements all around on arrangements & genres & such.

I liked one band I worked in, where the composer had the final say on arrangements, but everyone still had input on their parts. If you didn't like the part I came up with on your tune, you would suggest another approach, & I would do my best to get to where you wanted me to be.

I think I'm right in saying this? I've never been in any cover band in 20 years. Yes there were bands who did one here and there but they were only there as fillers really.

Covers are where the money is. Original music is where the money pit is. I suppose?

Of course if you get picked up which is unlikely in our electronic world it could reverse like our planets poles will do at some future point.

Bestest.

Covers are where the small, easy money is. Original music is where the big, hard to get money is.

I don't agree with people that think covers are stupid,to deny any former inspiration is a load of bull,I believe everyone at one time or another has heard a song and thought "Damn,I want learn to play that".Still doesn't take away from the fact that creating something of your own could be the most rewarding.

well what about accomplished bands who do covers? That sort of thing realy drives me nuts. of course it does seem that most bands that make it lately arent real bands anyway so you cant realy expect much out of them.

Van Halen's road to success was a cover of "you really got me". A lot of famous bands did covers at first including the Beatles (I think they had a different name then.) and a lot of other bands.
Personally, I like doing originals now, but in the heavy-band-playing days we did covers and originals in a ratio according to where we were playing and if it was a paying gig or keg -party, or ... depended on the venue.
