I like to hear simple bass lines that stay deep in the pocket, and happen to be melodic at the same time to add a little flavor to the songs. Here are some examples that I like:

311 - Amber, Do You Right, Creatures (For A While)
Incubis - When It Comes, Pardon Me
Mudvayne - Dig, Death Blooms, Happy
Sly and The Family Stone (nuf said, Larry Graham was the MAN!!)
Al Green - Let's Get It On
Dave Matthews Band - The Stone, Crash Into Me, Crush, What Would You Say
Dream Theater - Metropolis (Pt 1), Home
Rick James - Super Freak (that's right, RICK JAMES B*TCH$S!!)

And you know, the bass lines of that guy Pocket Grooves are OK too! :D

I like the bass break in All Right Now and also the one in Hot Legs

I prefer the early 70s rock bass lines, think James Gang, Grand Funk, Sly and The Family Stone had some great bass. Of course Zep. Money is great, and althought they didnt have a live bass player I like some of the Doors music.

In recent years I would say the way that Flea plays Higher Ground, really brought that song to life for me.

Wow. a Dream Theater reference. Awesome.

I'd go with (in no particular order):

Dream Theater - "New Millennium" (Myung on a Chapman Stick, simply awesome)

Rush - "Red Barchetta"

Enchant - "Under Fire"

Dream Theater - "Lifting Shadows"

I like to many to list and a lot have already been listed I agree mostly with jw123 The Doors, a song called Strange Days, White Wedding by Billy Idol has a cool bass line, any song by Rush or Dream Theater.

Does anyone remember a band from the 70's called Frank Moreno & Mahagony Rush? he was a very under rated guitar player! 8)
